Vikings’ Internal Rift Over Sam Darnold Revealed Amid Super Bowl Run

The Minnesota Vikings‘ decision to let Sam Darnold walk in free agency will be examined exhaustively over the two weeks leading up to Super Bowl 60.

While the Vikings’ investment in J.J. McCarthy made it difficult to justify a long-term deal for Darnold, there was the option of a franchise tag to keep him in Minnesota for the 2026 season.

Darnold’s subsequent success with the Seattle Seahawks has exacerbated an internal rift within the Vikings organization, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic.

“Some inside the building pushed to keep Darnold, thinking that with more time in the system, his professionalism and experience would matter more than a couple of free-agent signings,” Lewis wrote on January 27. “Others internally questioned McCarthy’s readiness for such a meaningful on- and off-field role with a team built to win now.

“A few weeks into the 2025 season, some within the Vikings building were juxtaposing the team’s turbulence with the Seahawks’ success. The disparity was jarring. In Minnesota, the offense seemed broken. In Seattle, Darnold was orchestrating one of the NFL’s most explosive passing games,” he added. “The widening gap in the record between the two teams made comparisons inevitable. The difference in production between elite receivers Justin Jefferson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn’t go unnoticed by Vikings players, either.”

Vikings’ Bet on JJ McCarthy Busts After Moving on From Sam Darnold

Two years ago, the Vikings embarked on the quarterback unknown, moving on from years of consistency at the position with Kirk Cousins.

The new regime explored what it could get out of Cousins and a roster of holdover household names from the Mike Zimmer era — but Kevin O’Connell could only inspire an aging roster to go so far. The 2022 Vikings fell in the wild-card round to a New York Giants team that was trounced by a perennial contender in the Philadelphia Eagles a week later.

The Vikings bet they could overcome Cousins’ departure, paving way for Darnold, who won 14 games but was flustered by the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round in 2024.

But that same bet, parting ways with Darnold, busted in McCarthy’s first year as a starter.

It’s been four seasons with the new Vikings regime, and they still have not won a playoff game. The Vikings took nine sacks in that playoff loss to Los Angeles just over a year ago, a sign that the offensive line needed more improvement that could only be gained with the benefits of building around a rookie-scale quarterback contract.

However, despite overhauling the O-line with three new starters, the Vikings are a step away from being back at square one under center. McCarthy enters a pivotal third season that could have the final say on his stay in Minnesota after merely plugging in a quarterback to a top-10 scoring offense with Darnold isn’t as seamless a fit as once thought.

Countless first-round quarterbacks have been ditched by the team that drafted them after their third season. The decision-makers who drafted them are often fired, or they are deemed not worth exploring on a fifth-year option and their teams would rather recoup the sunk draft capital.

Both rationales could prove true next year.

“The next few months — not to mention the 2026 season — could be something of a high-wire act for Minnesota’s decision-makers,” Lewis wrote. “How can they help McCarthy to improve while also getting the kind of quarterback play that earns double-digit wins and maintains confidence in their leadership? Given the lackluster free-agent QB class, who can the Vikings target to thread that microscopic needle?”

Vikings QB Situation a ‘Cautionary Tale’

To conclude his appraisal of the decisions that led the Vikings’ blunder of moving on from Darnold, Lewis summed the story up best.

“Perhaps it’s a cautionary tale about turning to a young quarterback too early,” Lewis posed. “Perhaps it’s a window into what can happen when a judgment is made based on the emotional end of a season rather than the entire experience.

“Perhaps it’s a reminder that even the best offensive systems need talented quarterbacks as much as, if not more than, talented quarterbacks need them.”
