The highway is closed between Winter Park and Interstate 70, according to a Colorado Department of Transportation alert.
Colorado State Patrol officials confirmed the crash in a post on the social media site X at 4:26 p.m., describing it as a head-on crash with a confirmed fatality.
There is no estimated time of reopening, according to the agency.
Drivers seeking an alternate route should take I-70 westbound to Silverthorne and then Colo. 9 north to U.S. 40.
