The single-vehicle collision happened around 7:10 p.m. south of Cottle Road. The man was driving a 2002 Toyota Sequoia more than 65 mph in the northbound fast lane when he veered into the center median, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The Toyota then collided with a metal guardrail and came to a rest in the fast lane, according to the CHP.

The CHP said the man died at the scene of injuries he suffered in the crash. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release his identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

The children – ages 2, 4 and 8 – were taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The CHP said it was not immediately clear if drugs or alcohol played a role.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact the CHP Hollister-Gilroy area office at 408-427-0700.
