Tens of thousands without power across metro Denver as winter storm takes toll

More than 700 scattered outages across metro Denver on Thursday afternoon knocked out power for tens of thousands of residents after a winter storm dumped heavy, wet snow across Colorado, Xcel Energy said.

As of 12:30 pm, Xcel Energy recorded 709 outages between Boulder and Castle Rock impacting 30,535 customers. Earlier in the morning, more than 1,000 outages knocked out power to in excess of 50,000 customers.

Denver had the highest amount of outages with 7,400 customers impacted followed by Lakewood with 6,100 customers, Littleton with 3,600 customers and Golden with 2,900 customers.

A hefty snowstorm hit Colorado overnight Wednesday, dropping more than 2 feet of snow in some of the Front Range foothills and up to 10 inches across metro Denver on Thursday morning. The storm has snarled traffic, disrupted flights and canceled and delayed schools.

The storm is expected to drop more than a foot of snow over most of Denver and more than 4 feet of snow in some of the foothills and mountains by Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Outside the foothills, snowfall has quieted Thursday, but forecasters expect it to pick back up Thursday afternoon.
