Seahawks Defensive Back Facing NFL Punishment for Actions in Super Bowl

Seattle Seahawks defensive back Josh Jobe will likely have a few days to savor his Super Bowl win before he has to face the music.

The cornerback got into a scrap during the Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots, delivering some late hits and an apparent punch late in the game. While officials decided to overlook the plays, the NFL is expected to hand down some financial punishment in the final fines for the 2025 season.

Josh Jobe Lost His Cool on Patriots Scoring Drive

The Seahawks took a shutout into the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over the Patriots, keeping them grounded while hounding quarterback Drake Maye and forcing him into several mistakes.

The Patriots finally got on the board in what was close to garbage time, scoring on a 35-yard pass from Maye to receiver Mack Hollins.

Before that play, Jobe nearly cost his team dearly after hitting wide receiver Stefon Diggs out of bounds. When Diggs responded by pushing Jobe in the facemask, the Seahawks cornerback threw a punch.

Players on both teams broke up the scuffle and referees chose not to throw any flags, but Jobe will face punishment for the NFL. As Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted, the league could hand out multiple fines for Jobe’s actions.

‘NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said the initial hit out of bounds ‘absolutely’ should have drawn a penalty. The post-play exchange should have triggered multiple additional flags,” Florio wrote. “Both players undoubtedly will be fined. Jobe could end up with more than one.”

It may not mean much for Jobe, who gets a Super Bowl ring. He does face an uncertain future, heading to free agency at the conclusion of the NFL year in March.

The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar suggested late in the season that the Seahawks would be wise to bring Joe back.

“Among cornerbacks with at least 200 snaps in coverage, Jobe has the 10th-lowest passer rating allowed (67.9), according to Pro Football Focus,” he wrote. “He’s one spot behind Texans All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. Woolen is 28th by the same metric; a notable name in that range would be Carolina’s Jaycee Horn, who ranks 25th and signed a four-year, $100 million deal this offseason. Woolen has six pass breakups and has surrendered two touchdowns. Jobe has four pass breakups and one interception; he has surrendered one touchdown.”

Stefon Diggs Not Dwelling on Incident

While he appeared heated after Jobe’s late hit and afterward, Diggs didn’t seem to dwell on the incident after the game. He credited the Seahawks for being the better team, then offered some encouragement for Maye.

“Keep going. Steph Curry. Keep shooting,” Diggs told reporters after the game, via NESN. “He’s 23 years old. It’s a team effort. From my standpoint, I wish I could’ve done more. It’s hard playing quarterback. It’s not a one-man band. He has a supporting cast. We needed to do a better job supporting him.

“He’s young, he did what he could, fought long, fought hard… I’m just super proud of him.”
