San Antonio Spurs’ Second-Round Playoff Series Schedule vs Timberwolves Revealed

The Minnesota Timberwolves punched their ticket to the Western Conference semifinals after beating the Denver Nuggets 4-2 in their first-round series matchup on Thursday.

The Timberwolves earned a date against the upstart San Antonio Spurs, a team led by Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio had an easier route to the second round, eliminating the Portland Trail Blazers in five games.

Minnesota enters the series against the Spurs at a disadvantage due to injuries. Donte DiVincenzo is out indefinitely after tearing his right Achilles tendon, while Anthony Edwards is recovering from a hyperextended left knee.

Even Ayo Dosunmu, who has been a sparkplug for the Timberwolves, was out in Game 6 because of a sore right calf.

The second-round series between the Spurs and Timberwolves are set to start on Monday, May 4. The Timberwolves get three days of rest before flying to San Antonio for Games 1 and 2.

It’s going to be a tight schedule for both teams, with just one day of rest in between Games 1 to 5. They get an extra day of rest in between Game 5 and 6, though the last three games are still tagged “if necessary.”

Timberwolves Won Regular-Season Series vs. Spurs

The Spurs and Timberwolves faced each other three times in the regular season, with Minnesota winning two of them. Both of the Timberwolves’ wins happened at the Target Center on November 30 and January 11.

San Antonio’s lone victory came at the Frost Bank Center on January 17.

In the Timberwolves’ 125-112 win in November, Wembanyama was absent due to an injury. But in their last two matchups, both teams were healthy, and both games didn’t disappoint.

The Timberwolves came back from a 19-point deficit on their January game, earning a 104-103 win. Edwards hit the game-winning floater with 16.8 seconds left.

Fast forward to six days later, and there was an epic duel between Edwards and Wembanyama in the Spurs’ 126-123 win. Edwards scored a career-high 55 points, while Wemby had 39 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

As for their postseason history, the two teams have only met twice in the first-round of the 1999 and 2001 NBA playoffs. The Spurs won both series 3-1.

At the time, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett were the best players for the Spurs and Timberwolves, respectively.
