Red Sox Trevor Story Drops Honest Take After Alex Cora Firing

The Boston Red Sox have won two straight under interim manager Chad Tracy, but the wins have not erased everything that came before them. Alex Cora and six coaches were let go Saturday night in a move that caught players off guard and sent a jolt through the clubhouse. The baseball has continued. The questions have not fully gone away.

Something shifted inside the visiting clubhouse at Rogers Centre after the final out Monday night. But adjusting to the new reality will take longer than two games.

After the win, Trevor Story spoke about where things stand.

Story Gets His Conversation With Breslow

Story had made clear Sunday that he needed more than what the initial team meeting offered.

Players had no chance to respond or ask questions in that setting, and for a veteran who had a genuine relationship with Cora and the departed coaches, that was not enough. Story said afterward he intended to have a follow-up conversation with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. He got that chance on Monday.

Story engaged with Breslow directly and worked through it. He came away from the discussion feeling heard, noting that Breslow understood how much those coaches meant to the players and that the two sides were able to work through their differences.

What Story Said Postgame

The wins have helped. So has time, even if there has not been much of it.

After Monday’s game, Story addressed the mood inside the clubhouse directly.

“The firings are still pretty fresh…We’re just trying to make the best of our situation,” Story said. “Trying to embrace it…and just go out there and compete and play ball.”

Just days removed from the dismissals, Story was not pretending the transition is complete. The group is focused on competing, adjusting to the changes around them, and staying in the moment.

What the Red Sox Are Building

Tracy, thrust into the interim role after Saturday’s dismissals, has won his first two games.

Suarez was dominant Monday, and the offense produced when it needed to. The club brought in four additional members of the coaching and support staff during the day, more new faces in a clubhouse already processing significant change. The atmosphere around the club had shifted from where it was over the weekend.

Boston is 12-17 on the season. The last few games have offered something to build on, and Tracy has kept things simple, kept the focus on competing, and let the results do the talking.

Story finished 0-for-4 on Monday and carries a .191 batting average into Tuesday. The personal numbers will need to improve. But his willingness to push for honest dialogue with the front office and compete through the noise says something about the kind of veteran presence he brings.

Final Word for the Red Sox

Story did not pretend everything is fine. He said they are making the best of their situation. That is honest. That is also exactly what a clubhouse needs from one of its veterans when the ground shifts beneath them.

Tracy has won two games. Breslow has stayed close. The players are competing.

The process of moving forward has started. That is enough for now.
