On Tuesday evening, the Philadelphia Phillies will open up their series with the San Francisco Giants (at home).
The Phillies are coming off a series where they lost two out of three to the Atlanta Braves (in Georgia).
Ahead of Tuesday’s game, the team announced the news that they had fired manager Rob Thomson after part of five seasons at the helm.
The Philadelphia Phillies wrote (via X): “The Phillies have relieved Rob Thomson of his duties as manager.”

Here’s what people were saying on social media:
@BryanBeck390558: “Phillies go 1-11 in their last 12 games. Average 3 runs / game in that span while giving up 6.6 runs per game. I’ll admit there is no juice in the clubhouse; probably Rob’s fault. Dave Dombrowski is throwing a Hail Mary to trying to save his job. It’s not looking good ATM.”
Spike Eskin: “Rob Thomson had a good run as manager, seems like a great guy and was not the only issue, clearly. But the team plays terrible fundamental baseball, makes an insane number of mental errors in the field and the base paths, and looks checked out. If that’s not on the manager I don’t know what is. Sometimes coaches and managers just run their course and the locker room/clubhouse stops responding and that is what happened here. They’re not a 100 win team but they also shouldn’t be the worst team in baseball.”
Chase Senior: “The Philadelphia Phillies have fired manager Rob Thomson. Dave Dombrowski is partially to blame for how he’s built the roster and the contracts he’s given out, but I think this needed to be done. The team has been sloppy, lackadaisical, undisciplined and lifeless. That can fall on the manager. Don Mattingly takes over as interim manager, but look out for Alex Cora to take over after the season, given his relationship with Dombrowski.”
Jon Marks: “Rob Thomson did a great job as Phillies manager, but realistically this is most logical move that could turn the season around. Doesn’t mean it will work, but unfortunately, Rob has to take the fall”
Luke Arcaini: “Official changes, per the Phillies: – Rob Thomson was relieved of his duties – Don Mattingly named interim manager – Dusty Wathan promoted to bench coach – Anthony Contreras (AAA manager) promoted to Phillies 3rd base coach”
David P. Samson: “As I said last week, John Middleton is not a patient owner. He was going to require change. And now less than a week later the Phillies have fired Rob Thomson.”

The Phillies have one of the most talented lineups in the National League with Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
However, they are at the bottom of their division with a 9-19 record in 28 games.
Last season, the Phillies made the MLB playoffs for the fourth straight season.
