Ravens ‘Accelerated’ Jesse Minter Hire Because of AFC Rival

The Baltimore Ravens finally settled on their replacement for John Harbaugh, choosing former defensive assistant Jesse Minter as their new head coach, but only after interest from an AFC rival “accelerated” the decision.

Minter, who spent the last two seasons as defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers, was hired on Thursday, January 22, but things might’ve been different if the Las Vegas Raiders had their way.

As Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported, the Ravens were considering waiting to speak with viable assistant coaches involved in this weekend’s conference Championship Games. Only for the Raiders to change those plans.

Zrebiec explained how the “Ravens loved a few of the assistants coaching Sunday. They were inclined, at one pt, to wait it out so they can interview them early this coming week. However, Raiders’ interest in Jesse Minter accelerated their process. They didn’t want to risk losing Minter.”

Those words create an immediate, not to mention probably unwanted, what if narrative around Minter. While his CV is strong, some fans may rue the Ravens not staying patient and waiting for some of the gifted play-callers still busy in these playoffs.

For now though, the focus must be on Minter and what he might bring to the top job in Baltimore.

Jesse Minter Decision Became Inevitable

The Ravens opting for Minter began to appear inevitable earlier in the day. Particularly after the 42-year-old rebuffed Baltimore’s AFC North rivals the Cleveland Browns.

News of Minter’s U-turn was broken by Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. She revealed “Minter is not interviewing for the #Browns HC job today as scheduled, likely because he feels like he has other HC opportunities that are more certain.”

His decision was likely influenced by how well Minter’s in-person interview with the Ravens had gone. They had already spoken with another former Raven, ex-defensive end Anthony Weaver, according to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley, but owner Steve Bisciotti and general manager Eric DeCosta chose not to risk missing out on securing Minter’s services.

Their quick action needn’t be interpreted as rash nor desperate. Not after Minter had beefed up already solid coaching credentials during a successful stint with the Chargers.

As Hensley pointed out, “In Minter’s two seasons as defensive coordintor, the Chargers allowed the 3rd fewest points in the NFL (18.9), trailing only the Broncos and Eagles.”

Such numbers have been beyond the Ravens in recent seasons. When inexperienced coordinator Zach Orr struggled calling plays.

Minter has shown more aptitude, while his own connections to the Ravens no doubt boosted his case to replace Super Bowl winner Harbaugh. Four seasons as defensive assistant then defensive backs coach from 2017-2020, make Minter familiar with the key players at M&T Bank Stadium, both on the roster and in the front office.

His knowledge will help Minter make a quick transition to working in a structure that occasionally denied Harbaugh a player he wanted. Working seamlessly with DeCosta will be crucial for Minter, if he’s going to ensure fans aren’t left wishing the Ravens had waited a little longer to name a new head coach.

Ravens Shunned Patience for New Head Coach

Staying calm and waiting would have led the Ravens to illuminating conversations with a few high-profiled assistants working in the AFC and NFC title games. Among them, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase are intriguing names.

Similarly strong cases would likely have been made by Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Denver Broncos DC Vance Joseph. The latter, like Minter, represented a good fit to fix the Ravens’ 24th-ranked defense.

Waiting for Joseph made some sense, but only if the Ravens weren’t completely sold on Minter. If they were, Bisciotti and DeCosta would’ve played a dangerous game when the Raiders could dangle the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL draft as a major rebuilding tool to entice Minter.
