Phillies $1.8 Million Pre-Agreement With 11-Year-Old Shortstop Raises Eyebrows

The Philadelphia Phillies are entering what feels like a very important season in 2026. Despite playing in a competitive National League East division, the Phillies are facing World Series or bust expectations every year they bring their current crop of star players back to town. And while they haven’t necessarily had the best offseason, Philadelphia will be facing those same heightened expectations this upcoming campaign.

And yet, while the Phillies are intent on doing whatever they can to win right now, the front office is also keeping its eye on the future. In some cases, that future is very far down the line, but Philly is making moves to win now and in upcoming seasons, which led them to make a stunning move involving David Basabe, who is an 11-year-old prospect.

In the modern era of MLB, identifying international prospects has become a key part of building up strong farm systems. Each team has a set amount of money allotted towards being used as part of their international signing bonus pool, which allows them to go and pursue prospects from all over the world.

Each year, teams become more and more aggressive in an effort to find a leg up on their competition. The Phillies appear to have taken things to another level with their scouting of Basabe, a shortstop prospect from Venezuela. Despite being only 11 years old, Basabe has already popped up on the radar of several major league teams.

Philadelphia became the first one to pounce, though, as it made a move to ensure that Basabe would be a part of its future. The Phillies recently reached a $1.8 million pre-agreement with Basabe, a stunning move that not only has helped him secure his future at a young age but also makes him the youngest player ever to reach a pre-agreement with a team in the majors.

“The Philadelphia Phillies have reached a pre-agreement with Venezuelan shortstop David Basabe for a $1.8 million bonus,” Wilber Sanchez reported in a post on X. “At just 11 years old, Basabe becomes the youngest player in history to secure a pre-agreement with a Major League organization. The agreement sets a new benchmark in the international market and places David Basabe firmly on the radar as one of the most ambitious bets of his generation.”

While there is still so much that could happen when it comes to Basabe’s future, this move could change the game when it comes to international free agent signings. Teams are looking to get ahead of each other so much that 11-year-olds are earning millions of dollars in pre-agreements. Sure enough, you can bet that other squads across the league are going to be following in the Phillies’ footsteps in the future.

And yet, while Basabe’s pre-agreement is an intriguing topic, it’s something that can be dealt with another day. The main goal for Philadelphia involves getting ready for the upcoming 2026 campaign, as the work this group puts in during Spring Training could end up determining how successful they are once the regular season rolls around.
