Patriots QB Drake Maye Gets Advice From Idol Following Loss

Former  New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton gave Patriots quarterback Drake Maye praise following the team’s 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.

Maye struggled under the bright lights, as he went 27-of-43 on the afternoon, throwing for 295 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. If there was one area where he did have a bit of consistency, it was in the running game. He carried the ball five times for 37 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry.

Newton has not exactly been a huge supporter of Maye’s over the course of the 2025 season. He repeatedly questioned the Patriots success over the course of the year, and was recently questioning their playoff success following the Patriots victory over the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round.

Maye has brushed off Newton’s criticism before, indicating that he was focused on only his current Patriots team.

However, Newton was much kinder this time around.  He delivered a message to Maye , as posted by First Take on Monday.

“I would allow myself, if I’m you, to feel every emotion of this game. Are you disappointed? You should be. But understand this, this game wasn’t just on what you did. … This season wasn’t a failure. You made leaps, strides and bounds to becoming an MVP candidate. … It’s only the beginning, not the end, “ Newton said.

New England Patriots QB Was Carolina Panthers Fan

It’s been widely documented that Drake Maye was a Carolina Panthers fan growing up. He was a fan of Newton’s, and attended Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium, the same stadium that he played in on Sunday night. The Carolina Panthers lost to the Broncos by a 24-10 score.

This is certainly a strong building block for Maye, as he was able to develop into a complete quarterback this year. He threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions on the season. The 77.1 quarterback rating was first in the NFL. In addition, he showed what he could do rushing the football. He had 98 rushing attempts for 450 yards and four touchdowns.

The North Carolina product will enter into his third season next year with stability on the coaching staff and a place to build from. He established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the AFC this year, and elevated the Patriots from a 4-13 finish last year to a Super Bowl appearance and playoff success.

Newton has been through difficult losses before, and his advice is not only calming but also factual. Maye was able to turn the Patriots around and become the cornerstone of the franchise in the span of a year. Now he is in a solid position to be able to take the next step

The future is bright in New England, and more pundits around the league are beginning to take notice of not only Maye but of the Patriots’ body of work under Mike Vrabel. It will be interesting to see what the quarterback can do in his third season, with a playoff appearance under his belt.
