After completing a three-game sweep over the Kansas City Royals, the New York Yankees now have a 13-9 record and are at the top of the American League East standings. With this, they are once again among the top teams in the league early on this season and certainly should be buyers once we get closer to the MLB trade deadline.
One of the Yankees’ biggest needs is another power hitter in their lineup, so it would not be surprising in the slightest if they look to make at least one major trade this campaign. It would be significant for them if they added another star to their roster as they look to win their first World Series championship since 2009.
Because of this, the Yankees are now being linked to one of the league’s top trade candidates during the early stages of the 2026 season.
New York Yankees Named A Potential Trade Destination for Nationals’ Star James Wood
In a recent article for Sports Illustrated, Patrick McAvoy took a look at the top five trade candidates in the league at this point in the season. Washington Nationals slugger James Wood made the cut, and it is understandable when noting that his name has come up in the rumor mill as a trade candidate since the offseason.
“If the Washington Nationals want to supercharge their rebuild, flipping the 23-year-old may be their best bet,” McAvoy wrote. “The Nationals shouldn’t trade Wood. But he will be someone to watch throughout the campaign if the Nationals flounder.”
McAvoy then named the Yankees as one of three potential landing spots for Wood. The other teams listed were the Houston Astros and the San Diego Padres.
If the Nationals end up making Wood available for trade, it would make a lot of the Yankees try to land him. He would be a perfect fit on their roster and would give them another star power hitter to work with in the middle of their lineup. Furthermore, he would have the potential to be a nice long-term part of the Yankees’ core, as he is only 23 years old and is still young enough that he could get even better.
Wood has been off to a strong start this season with the Nationals, as he has seven home runs, 18 RBIs, and a .247 batting average in 22 games. This is after he had 31 home runs, 94 RBIs, and a .256 batting average in 157 games last season with the Nationals. He was also an All-Star last season because of how well he played.
With numbers like these, Wood would be a massive addition to the Yankees’ roster if they won the sweepstakes for his services.
Wood Should Generate Interest From Several Teams Besides the Yankees
While Wood is being linked to the Yankees, there is no question that several other teams would love to have him on their roster. With Wood being so young, he would be a strong fit on both playoff and non-playoff teams. Thus, the market for his services should be extremely high if the Nationals make him available.
Nevertheless, it will be intriguing to see if the Yankees can end up swinging a deal with the Nationals to land Wood from here.
