ESPN may have just added fuel to growing concerns about the Philadelphia Eaglesâ linebacker room.
In its 2026 NFL free agency preview, ESPNâs Aaron Schatz projected one signing for every team and paired Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean with the Green Bay Packers.
Schatz wrote, âThe Packers are probably going to let linebacker Quay Walker leave after they declined his fifth-year option, which means they need an option to play next to Edgerrin Cooper. Dean is still only 25 years old and arguably stronger than Walker in pass coverage. Dean had four sacks, two forced fumbles and 55 total tackles last season.â
For Eagles fans, that projection feels very real.
Philadelphia is already preparing for change at linebacker. The team invested a first-round pick in Jihaad Campbell and recently extended Zack Baun. These are moves many around the league view as insurance in case Dean walks.
Reports have indicated a strong belief Dean will hit the open market when the new league year begins March 11. While Dean has publicly expressed a desire to remain in Philadelphia, the business side of things may ultimately push him elsewhere.
ESPN Connects Dean to Packers as Eagles Face Decision
From Green Bayâs perspective, the fit makes sense.
The Packers declined Quay Walkerâs fifth-year option, signaling uncertainty about his long-term future. If Walker departs, they will need a starting linebacker next to Edgerrin Cooper.
Deanâs age and skill set are appealing. At 25, he is viewed as an ascending player entering his prime.
In 2025, he recorded four sacks, two forced fumbles and 55 total tackles. He showed the ability to blitz from the second level and hold up in coverage.
Schatz specifically highlighted Deanâs strength in pass defense compared to Walker.
There is also a coaching connection. Dean played under Jonathan Gannon during his rookie season in Philadelphia. Gannon is set to become Green Bayâs defensive coordinator in 2026, which could make the transition seamless.
For a team looking to get younger and faster defensively, Dean fits the mold.
Eagles Must Weigh Nakobe Deanâs Injury History
Nakobe Deanâs biggest question mark remains his durability.
Dean has battled a torn pectoral, a Lisfranc foot injury and a torn patellar tendon in his knee. A late-season hamstring injury in 2025 added to that list. Over four NFL seasons, he has logged only 1,500 defensive snaps and has started more than eight games just once.
That history has created wide-ranging contract projections.
Spotrac estimates a deal around $7.9 million annually over four years, while other analysts believe he could command closer to $10 to $13 million per year if the market heats up. Opinions are clearly split.
For the Eagles, the decision will likely come down to risk tolerance.
When healthy, Dean has flashed difference-making ability and emotional leadership in the middle of the defense.
But with younger options already in place and financial priorities elsewhere, ESPNâs projection to Green Bay may not be far-fetched.
