Miami Heat Trade Pitch Lands Giannis a $105M 24-Year-Old Elite Scoring Guard

The Miami Heat is still exploring ways to improve the roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. 

Many expected the Heat to pivot quickly after missing out on signing LeBron James, who joined the rival Philadelphia 76ers in July. Instead, the Heat has yet to make a single roster move despite multiple names being tied to the organization. 

According to numerous reports, Miami has free agents DeMar DeRozan and Bradley Beal on its radar. Even higher on the priority list is Klay Thompson, the 36-year-old Dallas Mavericks guard who is entering the final season of a three-year contract he signed as a free agent in 2024. 

In terms of trades, the Heat already made the biggest of the summer. But could there be another splash on the way?

The Heat nearly emptied its asset clip in the deal to acquire Antetokounmpo, the 31-year-old two-time NBA MVP, from the Milwaukee Bucks in June. If the Heat tries to make another trade, it’ll have to strategize. 

In a hypothetical scenario, the Heat picks up the phone and calls the Phoenix Suns to execute a trade for 24-year-old scoring guard Jalen Green. Here is a proposed framework.

Heat receives: Jalen Green

Suns receive: Nikola Jovic, Davion Mitchell, Dru Smith, a 2028 first round pick and a 2031 second round pick

It is important to reiterate that this trade is hypothetical and intended for some fun debate. So, why might both teams agree to this trade?

Why Miami and Phoenix Do the Deal

For the Suns, they acquired Green in a trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. Green is definitely on the younger side and has room for improvement, but the Suns, who have gotten even more expensive after signing forward Dillon Brooks to a multi-year contract extension, could look to free up some wiggle room by trading Green, who struggled to stay consistent last season.

Instead, Phoenix, which might look to rebuild and go younger in the coming years, could get its hands on Jovic, the 23-year-old potential future star, and a reliable two-way star in Mitchell. Not to mention a couple of attractive draft assets. 

For Miami, taking on Green’s hefty salary over the next two seasons is somewhat risky, but there is plenty of reason to believe the high-flying, scoring-minded guard can secure star status playing alongside Antetokounmpo. 

Green struggled with injuries last season, appearing in just 32 games. But he played in at least 67 games in each of the previous five years dating back to his rookie season. 

In the 2024-25 season, Green’s final with the Houston Rockets, who drafted him No. 2 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, Green averaged 21 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while playing in all 82 games.

Given Green’s youth, upside and electric scoring ability, he makes sense for the Heat in a lot of ways. Score-first guards have historically done well playing alongside Antetokounmpo, whose interior gravity consistently creates easier scoring opportunities for teammates.

The Heat has added Antetokounmpo, a top five player in the league. When a team lands a player of such caliber, taking another big swing is part of the job. Championship windows don’t stay open forever.
