The New York Mets are entering the 2026 season with the goal of bouncing back. The 2025 season did not treat the Mets kindly, as they finished the campaign with an 83-79 record and missed the playoffs. When noting that they entered last season with high expectations, this kind of campaign was unacceptable for the Mets.
In response to their disappointing season, the Mets ended up making multiple additions during the winter. Among the players who the Mets added to their roster this offseason include Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta, Luis Robert Jr, Marcus Semien, Devin Williams, Jorge Polanco, and Luke Weaver. With this, the Mets undoubtedly are entering this season with a different-looking roster and will be looking to do some damage.
Yet, when looking at the Mets’ current roster, it is clear that they would benefit by adding another impactful outfielder. Because of this, they are now being viewed as a top trade fit for a very interesting outfielder on the Boston Red Sox.
Mets Named Trade Fit for Red Sox Outfielder Wilyer Abreu
In a recent article for FanSided, Mark Powell named the best landing spots for a handful of baseball’s top trade candidates. Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu was among the players mentioned, and it makes sense when noting that he has been creating buzz in the rumor mill since the offseason.
When it came to Abreu, Powell argued that the Mets would be the best landing spot for him.
“If the World Baseball Classic was any indication, his best days are ahead of him, and the Red Sox would be wise to cash in on his momentum while they have the chance. ESPN mocked an Abreu trade to the New York Mets in exchange for Brett Baty. This is the sort of Abreu trade Boston would consider, as the Red Sox would prefer an MLB-ready player back in return. Baty has plenty of experience at third base and had a 2.3 fWAR last season – a similar number to Abreu,” Powell wrote.
When looking at the Mets’ roster, there is no question that they could use an outfielder like Abreu right now. He would undoubtedly give their roster a significant boost, as he makes a big impact at both the plate and in the field.
Abreu just had a strong 2025 season with the Red Sox, as he set career highs with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs. With numbers like these, he would give the Mets’ lineup more pop. Furthermore, he also won his second straight Gold Glove Award due to his excellent fielding. With this, he would be a major pickup for a Mets team with high expectations.
Red Sox Have Big Decision to Make With Abreu
With how well Abreu has played for the Red Sox, it is clear that trading him would come with some real risk. This is especially so when noting that he is still in the early stages of his career and only 26 years old. However, with the Red Sox having a surplus of MLB-caliber outfielders, Abreu could be a great trade chip for them to dangle to improve their roster elsewhere.
If the Red Sox end up shopping Abreu, it would make a ton of sense for the Mets to target him. It will be interesting to see if they do just that from here.
