Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers are pinning a lot of their hopes on improved offensive line play this season on Jordan Morgan. Pundits expect the third-year lineman to finally nail down left tackle for the Packers in 2026.
To do that, the former first-round selection will have to play better than he did at right tackle and guard last season. LaFleur stressed to reporters Thursday, though, that he has plenty of confidence that will happen.
“I think going back to last year when we had that competition and just seeing how he performed. I think he’s done a good job,” said LaFleur. “It hasn’t been perfect; it’s not perfect for anybody. But the athleticism, the skillset, all that’s there.
“It’s just putting it together on a consistent basis down-in and down-out.”
The Packers selected Morgan at No. 25 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, he made 13 starts. But just one of them was at left tackle.
Matt LaFleur Addresses Confidence in Jordan Morgan at LT
GettyGreen Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur addressed the training camp performance of former first-round pick Jordan Morgan on Thursday.
The Packers selected Morgan in the first round to be the team’s franchise left tackle. That’s the only placed where he played during his college career at Arizona.
Because the Packers previously had Rasheed Walker at left tackle, though, Green Bay tried to find other places for Morgan — guard or right tackle.
Walker left in free agency this offseason. That opened the door for Morgan to play left tackle.
Fans on social media appear wary of Morgan on Jordan Love’s blindside. At best, Morgan was only serviceable at right tackle and guard.
However, left tackle is clearly Morgan’s most natural position. The Packers hope moving him back to where he is most comfortable will make a difference.
As LaFleur said it, the talent is there. It’s about Morgan building consistency.
“He’s a capable run blocker and pass protector, and he features projectable upside with more work,” wrote NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein during the 2024 draft process. “Morgan has the traits and talent to become a solid starting left tackle.”
Will Morgan Help Solidify Packers Offensive Line?
GettyJordan Morgan will be the new starter at left tackle for the Green Bay Packers in 2026.
Morgan flipping to left tackle is the biggest change for the Packers offensive line. But it’s not the only one.
In addition to allowing Walker to leave in free agency, Green Bay also released veteran interior lineman Elgton Jenkins. He spent half of last season at center before missing the final part of the year with injury.
Jenkins was better served in Green Bay playing guard, not center. After his injury, Sean Rhyan moved from guard to center and fared better.
The Packers hope a whole year of Rhyan at center this fall will provide better results.
No other Packers starting offensive lineman is changing positions. But they could see more action at their spots because of the position changes for Morgan and Rhyan.
Packers fans will see the line in action for the first time Thursday, August 13 during Week 1 of the preseason.
