Jack Kayil’s encouraging NBA Summer League performance created the possibility that the New York Knicks might accelerate his arrival.
Instead, the organization’s original development plan appears to have prevailed.
Kayil has agreed to a long-term, multiyear contract with ALBA Berlin, according to Rupert Fabig of the Hamburger Abendblatt. The agreement will keep the 20-year-old guard in Germany while the Knicks retain his NBA rights.
ALBA will pay a buyout to Mega, the Serbian club that controlled Kayil’s contract after loaning him to Berlin last season. The arrangement resolves a complicated negotiation involving the Knicks, both European clubs and other interested teams from Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga.
For New York, the outcome confirms that Kayil will begin his career as a draft-and-stash prospect rather than compete for an NBA or two-way roster spot this fall.
Jack Kayil Showed Promise During Knicks Summer League
The Knicks acquired Kayil’s draft rights after the Houston Rockets selected him with the No. 39 pick in June. His immediate future remained unsettled when a contractual clearance issue delayed his summer-league debut.
Once Kayil reached the court, he made a compelling first impression.
The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 8.8 points, 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals in four games. He shot only 34% from the field and 23% from 3-point range, but those numbers did not fully capture his ability to change pace, enter the paint and pressure opposing ballhandlers.
Kayil scored 12 points with five rebounds and three assists in his debut against San Antonio. Two days later, he delivered his best performance of the summer, producing 19 points, four assists and three steals in an 86-75 victory over Detroit.
That performance prompted speculation that New York could reconsider stashing him. Kayil also made his preference clear, saying his dream was to begin his NBA career with the Knicks.
The final decision, however, was never his alone.
ALBA Berlin Offers Clear Development Path

Kayil returns to an organization in which he already has an established role and considerable trust.
During his breakout 2025-26 season, the Berlin native averaged 12.3 points, 3.6 assists and 2.7 rebounds in Bundesliga play. He helped ALBA win the German championship and was named the league’s best young player after receiving more than 90% of the vote. In Berlin, Kayil should receive meaningful minutes against experienced professionals while continuing to refine his shooting, decision-making and physical strength. Remaining overseas also allows the Knicks to preserve a roster spot and avoid adding another salary as they operate with limited flexibility beneath the second apron.
The move is a delay, not a separation.
New York used a valuable second-round selection on Kayil because of his size, defensive instincts and playmaking potential. His summer-league showing reinforced that investment, even if it did not alter the timeline.
Kayil wanted his Knicks career to begin immediately. The franchise appears to believe the best way to prepare him for New York is to let him keep growing at home.
