The Seattle Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-2 at T-Mobile Park, but the story was the benches-clearing incident in the eighth inning. Gabe Speier, who plunked Gleyber Torres, was handed a three-game suspension and fined an undisclosed amount.
The pitch that led to the discipline could easily be interpreted as retaliatory. In the previous half-inning, catcher Cal Raleigh took a pitch in the ribs from Enmanuel De Jesus.
After Torres took exception to the retaliatory pitch, the Tigers and Mariners benches emptied. In the aftermath of the incident, Speier and Mariners manager Dan Wilson were ejected from the ballgame. Wilson was also served a one-game ban.
Mariners’ Gabe Speier and Dan Wilson Suspended After Retaliatory Pitch vs. Tigers
Following the benches-clearing incident, it isn’t a surprise to see MLB sanction both Gabe Speier and Dan Wilson. The fact that Wilson was also suspended for this suggests that the league judged the Gleyber Torres hit-by-pitch as intentional and retaliation.
It doesn’t help that Speier threw at Torres on the previous pitch and missed.
Tigers announcer Andy Dirks immediately linked the Cal Raleigh hit-by-pitch in the previous inning. Dirks said, courtesy of Jomboy Media’s clip of the Tigers’ broadcast, “I have a feeling they did not like Cal Raleigh getting plunked earlier in the ballgame.”
Tensions in this game had been brewing due to what Mariners television play-by-play announcer Aaron Goldsmith called “a plunking pandemic”. Bryan Woo hit three Tigers batters during his start, in which he tossed seven scoreless innings.
It’s unclear if Woo’s start led to Cal Raleigh’s hit-by-pitch in the seventh. Raleigh required a visit from the trainers, but ultimately finished the game. The Mariners star catcher was out of the lineup for the following game, however.
After Raleigh was plunked, the Mariners took offense and went after Torres. The benches then cleared, leading to the crew chief, Mark Wegner, to eject both Wilson and Speier from the game. The disciplinary report from the umpiring crew likely passed on to MLB, who then issued the suspensions.
What’s Next for Gabe Speier and Dan Wilson?
Speier will likely appeal his suspension, in hopes of at least getting it reduced. He will continue to pitch while his suspension remains under appeal. Once the appeal is over, the Mariners will remain a man short in their bullpen for the suspension’s duration.
The 31-year-old left-hander has been a reliable arm for Seattle the past two seasons. In his last 112 appearances, he carries a 2.45 ERA and 2.89 FIP over 92 innings.
His underlying metrics in 2026 aren’t as great as 2025, when he was one of the top left-handed relievers in the game. While his ERA is down to 2.10 this season, his FIP has spiked to 4.09, and his strikeout rate has dipped nearly 12% compared to last season.
However, he remains one of Wilson’s most trusted arms in the bullpen.
Dan Wilson’s suspension might be more of a cut-and-dried situation. He doesn’t have a union behind him as Speier does, as The Seattle Times‘ Ryan Divish points out, so he can’t appeal. Bench coach Manny Acta will manage the series finale against the Tigers.
Divish also believes that Speier’s suspension will be reduced to two games.
