The Los Angeles Lakers are still assessing their options with Bronny James as they plan to get the roster in check in time for the start of the 2026-27 season.
With LeBron James now gone, it looks a little bit more complicated. It was always easier to keep his son around with him present. However, he walked in free agency, and the Lakers are not obligated to keep Bronny if he doesnât fit into their roster plans.
The Lakers did guarantee his $2.3 million salary for the upcoming season, but it also makes him expendable. For the right return, there is a feeling that the franchise would move Bronny.
There is a proposed trade that makes it possible due to his low salary.
In the hypothetical proposal, the Lakers get AJ Green and a 2031 second round pick. The Miami Heat get Bronny James, while the Milwaukee Bucks get Dalton Knecht and a 2032 second round pick.
The Lakers would be moving two less-significant deals to get Green as a depth piece.

Bronnyâs deal wonât significantly affect the cap space and that is exactly the kind of deal the Heat could make to fill up a roster spot.Â
After acquiring two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miamiâs cap space is tight with limited flexibility to move for high-end additions and the team doe need depth additions following significant departures.
The Lakers on the other hand, need to trim the roster and thus, moving two pieces in this proposal serves that purpose. But moving Bronny as well as Knecht separately would hardly get the organization any return outside of a possible second round pick.Â
The Heat was rumored to be open to taking Bronny to lure LeBron to South Beach. That didnât happen, but the Heat could still take the younger James as it is a no-risk move to watch his development as he remains under team control through the 2027-28 season.

Green had a breakout year in the 2025-26 season. He played the most games in his career at 78 games and started almost 10 times as much as he had ever started in his career.Â
The Bucks didnât have a good season with Antetokounmpo in and out of the lineup with injuries, but Green was one of the more consistent stars. He averaged 10.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
More importantly, Green connected on 41.9 percent of his shots from 3 on 7.1 attempts per game, making him a potential reliable stretch option around Luka Doncic.Â
He would ordinarily be coming in as a backup option given that the Lakersâ two main guard options are Doncic and Reaves. However, he would be a cleaner fit production-wise than Bronny if he remains. The younger James entering his third season would still be averaging single-digit minutes, which wonât do his development any good.
Keeping him is still an option for the Lakers, but the franchise is still reportedly targeting more incoming players this offseason. Either way, some of the current players would still have to be moved to create space.Â
