Maple Leafs Linked with Top Pending Free Agent

The Toronto Maple Leafs are being urged to land the top-rated European free agent this summer. Toronto is currently enduring a brutal 2025-26 season and is almost certain to miss the upcoming playoffs. After just two wins in their last 10 games, the Leafs are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division standings.

To make matters worse, Toronto’s top player, Auston Matthews, recently had surgery to repair a torn MCL. The star will miss the rest of the current campaign, but is expected to be healthy this summer. As if the situation could not be any worse, there have been suggestions that Matthews could soon depart the team. The forward has two more years remaining on his current contract.

Although there has been a lot of bad news for Toronto this season, the club could start the offseason with a bang. The Athletic’s Joshua Kloke has revealed that the Maple Leafs are interested in signing the highly-rated Vitaly Pinchuk this summer. Pinchuk will soon be a European free agent and can pick his next NHL team rather than go through the draft.

Kloke has urged Toronto to resist a recent trend of targeting low-risk players. Instead, the reporter asks the club to take a chance on a young player with potentially high upside. The Belarusian forward has racked up 31 goals and 34 assists (65 points) in 64 KHL games with Dinamo Minsk so far this season.

Versatile Vitaly Pinchuk Could Give Toronto Maple Leafs Much-Needed Boost

GettyAssuming he remains in Toronto, GM Brad Treliving has to make bold moves this summer.

Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, just about every other NHL team also has registered interest in Pinchuk. Earlier this month, Kloke’s colleague at The Athletic, Thomas Drance, revealed that up to 29 North American clubs have already reached out to the player’s reps. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman also previously pointed out the abundance of interest in the forward in November 2025.

The Athletic’s Corey Pronman recently labeled Pinchuk as the best European or college free agent in 2026. According to the analyst, the versatile forward can help his next team in multiple ways. “Pinchuk has been one of the top forwards in the KHL this season,” Pronman wrote in February.

“He’s a big winger who skates quite well and can push the pace at even strength. He has good hands, makes difficult plays, and can finish chances well. Pinchuk is decent around the net, although he’s not overly physical. He checks a lot of boxes you look for in a potential middle-six forward.”

Maple Leafs Have Money to Sign Highly-Rated Forward

Potentially landing Pinchuk will take some work for Toronto. The club is, however, in a good place to make a realistic run at the budding star. Toronto will have plenty of money this summer to offer an attractive contract to the young forward. According to PuckPedia.com, the club has nearly $24 million in projected cap space for the 2026-27 season. Because of his age, Pinchuk can only sign a one-year deal this summer.

Pinchuk will likely have some mutual interest in the Maple Leafs as well. After all, joining a lineup that includes William Nylander, Matthew Knies, and Matthews (assuming he stays) would be enticing. Nevertheless, Toronto has to be serious in its offer to the youngster. As Kloke points out, 24-year-old scoring centers do not exactly become available frequently.
