Thankful for these Colorado defenders of democracy

Ken Buck bucked the herd and voted against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. He knew that was not the answer to solving the immigration problem and a waste of taxpayer time and money. After decades of poor policy, new bipartisan Senate policies, now “dead,” might have helped. We will never know.
The Republican congressional sheep and puppets chose to help Donald Trump use immigration as a political stumping tool instead. How is this for the people? It’s not; only Trump benefits. We already tried his immigration solution. It didn’t work.
Most immigrants are desperate people, but Congress continues to fail them and our country by playing political games. Enough! I am sorry to see Ken Buck leave his district after showing integrity in office. Those who are vying to replace him are lacking or lackeys!

It’s good to know that there are old-guard Republicans out there who care about democracy and understand that governing requires the hard work of compromise and respect for the process. They give me hope that the state of the Union can recover from the assault of the malignant cult of Donald Trump.
Thank you, Mary Estill Buchanan, Mike Coffman, et al., for your courage and fortitude in denouncing Tina Peters for her unlawful acts and betrayal of her office as Clerk and Recorder of Mesa County.

Trump’s words spell danger
Re: “NATO leader: Trump puts allies at risk,” Feb. 12 news story, and “Haley challenges Trump on her home turf,” Feb. 11 news story
I heard Reba McEntire sing the national anthem Sunday night, and the words “land of the free and the home of the brave” hit hard. The USA always defends freedom and our allies. We do not stop doing this because of money owed. We do not invite tyrants and enemies to attack our friends over money. The statements Donald Trump made are a disgrace to this great country.
His statements regarding Nikki Haley’s husband are also disgusting. This man is defending our freedom and, by doing this, is sacrificing time with his family.
Trump’s derogatory comments regarding late Sen. John McCain’s service also ring in my head.
Our country deserves better from our leaders.

Two thoughts occur to me as I read about Donald Trump blithely reiterating his position that he made when he was president that he would warn NATO allies that he would encourage Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to countries that didn’t pay their way in the alliance and that “you gotta pay your bills…you gotta pay your bills”.

First, these comments were from the guy who has had hundreds, if not thousands, of lawsuits over the years filed due to non-payment of contractors’ bills associated with construction projects at his resorts and casino. Talk about hypocrisy.
Second, if Trump made good on his threat, our U.S. NATO generals would have to add a staff accountant to continually check the financial standing of his NATO allies. Is that country on his left flank in good standing or not? Russia’s Vladimir Putin must be licking his chops.
The world is a different place now and Trump should not be making these irresponsible threats. The tragic war in Ukraine illustrates that Putin would be more than happy to live up to Trump’s praise of his iron-handed dictatorship. A dictatorial system of government I’m sure Mr. Trump would love to emulate if elected president.
