Lakers Brace for New Rockets Starting 5 After Kevin Durant News

The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for a dramatically different Game 2 as Kevin Durant has been cleared to return after missing the series opener with a knee injury.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Durant is set to suit up Tuesday night after sitting out Game 1 due to a knee tendon bruise.

“Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has been cleared to return for Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers after missing Game 1 due to a knee tendon bruise,” Charania reported on X.

Kevin Durant Return Looms Over Game 2

Durant’s availability had been in question leading into Game 2 after he participated in only part of practice. Ime Udoka previously described mobility — not just pain tolerance — as the key factor in determining whether Durant could play.

Now, with Durant cleared and reportedly not facing a minutes restriction, the challenge for Los Angeles intensifies significantly.

The two-time champion’s return instantly restores Houston’s primary offensive engine — one that was sorely missed in Game 1.

Lakers Took Advantage in Game 1 Without Durant

The Lakers capitalized on Durant’s absence with a convincing 107-98 win in the opener, executing one of their most efficient performances of the postseason.

Luke Kennard led the way with 27 points, while LeBron James orchestrated the offense with 19 points and 13 assists. Deandre Ayton added 19 points and 11 rebounds as Los Angeles shot a blistering 60.6% from the field.

Defensively, the Lakers held Houston to just 37.6% shooting, overcoming a significant disadvantage on the glass, including 21 offensive rebounds by the Rockets.

“That’s what it has to be — a collective group,” James said after Game 1. “When you’re missing so much firepower… we all have to do our job.”

Rockets Starting Lineup Shift Expected

Durant is expected to rejoin the starting lineup immediately, replacing Reed Sheppard if active, according to Lakers beat reporter Jovan Buha.

“Ime Udoka said the Rockets will use the same starting five as Game 1 if Kevin Durant is out. If Durant is available, he’ll replace Reed Sheppard in the starting group,” Buha reported.

Earlier in the day, Udoka noted Durant was still testing his knee, but his clearance signals confidence from the medical staff.

Notably, Udoka indicated that Durant would not be on a minutes restriction — a key detail that suggests a full workload could be expected.

Lakers Adjust Game Plan for Durant

With Durant back, the Lakers must recalibrate defensively. Players like Jarred Vanderbilt are expected to take on primary assignments, but Los Angeles will likely rely on team defense to contain one of the NBA’s most efficient scorers.

“It takes everybody. It won’t be one guy’s assignment,” Vanderbilt said. “He’s pretty much the most dangerous person on their team.”

Durant’s presence not only adds scoring but also reshapes Houston’s spacing, creating easier looks for teammates and forcing tougher defensive rotations.

Series Momentum at Stake

Game 2 now carries heightened stakes, with Houston aiming to even the series and Los Angeles looking to maintain control.

If Bill Belichick has to wait a year so 49ers’ Roger Craig makes the Hall of Fame, that’s a no-brainer

Durant’s return threatens to swing momentum quickly. His scoring ability, playoff experience and gravity on the floor present a far different test than what the Lakers faced in Game 1.

For Los Angeles, the formula remains simple — disciplined defense, efficient offense and readiness for a fully reloaded Rockets squad.
