Kyler Murray to the Jets? Why It Could Actually Happen

The New York Jets enter the offseason with one major question: who will be their starting quarterback next season?

Last year’s opening-day starter, Justin Fields, remains under contract but is widely expected to be released after a very disappointing season, leaving uncertainty at the most important position on the field as the Jets plan for next season.

Several names have been linked to the Jets’ quarterback spot, but arguably the best option is Kyler Murray. The Arizona Cardinals quarterback may be more likely to land in New York than some fans realize, as the pairing makes a lot of sense for both the team and Murray.

“The Cardinals are in the midst of hiring a new head coach who may want to hand pick his own quarterback. Murray could give the Jets’ offense a much-needed floor to build up from while throwing to Garrett Wilson and others,” wrote Podell.

Breaking Down Why Kyler Murray to the Jets Makes Sense

With a weak quarterback class entering the 2026 NFL Draft and limited viable options in free agency, the Jets might be better off trading for a quarterback this offseason, and Murray is arguably the best name potentially available.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn enters the offseason in a position where league insiders believe he could be coaching for his job next season after a disappointing 3–14 first year. There is no question Glenn wants a quarterback who gives him the best chance to win games, and that would likely be Murray.

If New York believes in the upside Murray could bring to the team, trading for him could be worth serious consideration.

A deal for Murray also likely would not require the Jets to give up major assets, as his large contract lowers his trade value and New York has a large amount of cap space, currently listed at $66,338,070 according to OverTheCap.

“He has three years remaining on his five-year, $230.5 million contract extension, so perhaps Murray’s acquisition cost via trade isn’t as high as it may have been even just a couple years ago,” wrote Podell.

Why Kyler Murray’s Upside Is Appealing

There is no question Murray has the potential to succeed in the NFL, as he was selected first overall by the Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft for a reason.

Murray brings unteachable speed and athleticism, along with the ability to extend plays and deliver accurate passes on the run.

The Cardinals have not been a consistently successful team with Murray under center, which is one reason the organization is expected to be open to trading him.

Although his tenure in Arizona has been underwhelming, it can be argued that Murray may simply need a change of scenery, as the Cardinals have not been able to build a successful roster around their former first overall selection at quarterback.

There is no question that Murray’s style of play would fit well in New York. The team operates a run-first approach, and its passing game is designed for a mobile quarterback to extend plays and thrive, as the offense was built around Fields last season. Although it did not work out with Fields, Murray brings a stronger skill set as a passer.

Plugging the veteran Cardinals quarterback into an offense with a promising offensive line, a star wide receiver in Garrett Wilson, and potentially running back Breece Hall if he returns would make for an offense with intriguing upside.
