As has been the case at this time the last several years, the Golden State Warriors donât appear to have a stress-free offseason upcoming.Â
The team has been in a rough patch virtually the entire season, with injuries the most to blame.Â
The season began spiraling the night of Jan. 19. Star swingman Jimmy Butler suffered a torn ACL and isnât expected to return anytime before midseason next year at the earliest.
Less than two weeks later, star point guard Stephen Curry began what has gone on to be a lengthy shutdown.
Then less than a week later, the Warriors tried changing the complexion of their season by trading the ill-fitting Jonathan Kuminga for veteran big man Kristaps Porzingis. Things are where they are now, but only for now.Â
Porzingis has flashed immense star potential over his long career, but he hasnât yet found a long-term home.Â
That naturally leaves questions about his Warriors future.Â
Freshly-acquired Golden State Warriors big man has uncertain feelingsÂ
The Porzingis trade marked the second year in a row Golden State has gone all-in at the February trade deadline.
A year ago, the franchise made a splash by acquiring a disgruntled Butler from the Miami Heat. The fit with the Warriors was immediately harmonious, but injuries were again perhaps the biggest reason Golden Stateâs momentum was halted and its season was over.
In what was supposed to be the first full year of the Curry-Butler partnership, neither has been on the court enough for any promise to show.Â
As the Warriors currently stand, things are in the hands of Porzingis, who is trying to help keep his team afloat as Curryâs absence has extended past two months. Porzingis hasnât been entirely healthy, either, but the Dubs surely understood his checkered past when it comes to durability.Â

The outcome of the season could play a role in what Porzingis decides to do after the Warriors 2025-26 campaign is over. The 30-year-old big man is in the market for a new contract this summer, and heâs not yet sure he wants to extend his stay in the Bay past April.Â
âIâm not gonna lie and say I havenât thought about it at all,â Porzingis told the San Francisco Chronicle when asked about his future with the franchise. âI donât have anything cemented in my brain yet. My main goal was to get healthy first: play, show the team Iâm healthy and everythingâs good. Also show myself Iâm healthy and then go into the summer with a clear mind, feeling good. Then make the right decision for me, so weâll see how that looks once we finish the season.â
Should Golden State aim to retain Porzingis?
Continuity is hard to find in todayâs NBA; Porzingis hasnât developed that quite yet, but he can if Curry is able to return soon enough and the two get some burn together on the hardwood.Â
Golden State has lost some serious firepower this season. Everyone knows what happened to Butler and roughly how long the injury he sustained takes to rehab, but the Warriors will also be playing most of, if not all of, next season without the rising Moses Moody, who suffered a terrible knee injury in Dallas last week.
Losing Porzingis this offseason gives Curry and the Warriors little to work with next season, unless they find an equivalent or better replacement.Â
While the franchise has been rumored to be interested in some major names this summer, it is much less of a hassle to bring back a star already under your nose.Â
A core of Curry, Porzingis and Draymond Green delivers some optimism for next season. If Butler can return, the Warriors can truly become formidable.
There is a ton of uncertainty around the franchise and what direction it seeks to take in the short-term. All that can be said for now is Curry, the franchise cornerstone, will be 39 next season and wonât sit still if the Warriors donât make win-now moves.Â
A pressing offseason for GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. and his cohorts is on the precipice.Â
