Klint Kubiak to Raiders: Seahawks Have to ‘Hope’ They Don’t Lose More

Klint Kubiak is reportedly on track to become the Las Vegas Raiders’ next head coach after the Super Bowl, putting the Seattle Seahawks right back into a high-stakes offensive coordinator search, and creating fresh worry they could lose additional staff.

The latest Raiders news wave came after ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Kubiak “intends to try to work out a deal” with Las Vegas, but the move can’t be formally finalized until after Seattle’s Super Bowl matchup. Heavy.com initially flagged the momentum in Kubiak’s situation earlier in the week as the Seahawks’ run continued.

On X, Seahawks-focused reporter Brian Nemhauser summed up the fear in Seattle succinctly: congrats to Kubiak, and now the Seahawks have to “hope” they don’t lose more, including the possibility Kubiak could target defensive coordinator Aden Durde for a new staff.

Gary Kubiak, Klay Kubiak and Klint Kubiak’s Coaching History

If Schefter’s report holds, it’s another jolt of instability for a Seahawks offense that would be replacing its play-caller again, not because of failure, but because Kubiak’s stock rose fast.

Kubiak has built a fast-rising NFL resume by bouncing through several offenses and roles, most notably with the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos. After getting his start in the league as a quality control coach with the Vikings, he moved into quarterback-focused work and later became Minnesota’s quarterbacks coach, eventually taking on offensive coordinator duties in 2021. From there, Kubiak spent time with the Broncos as their passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach, continuing to develop a reputation as a coach tied to the West Coast/outside-zone family tree popularized by his father, Gary Kubiak, before emerging this postseason as a head-coaching candidate. He first became an offensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints in 2024 before joining the Seahawks this season.

Kubiak, 38, has become one of the most searched coaching names of the week, and not just because of the Raiders. His background and his last name carries legendary weight in NFL circles: Gary Kubiak is his dad (and a long-time NFL head coach), and the Kubiak family has quietly turned into an NFL coaching pipeline.

That includes Kubiak’s brother Klay Kubiak, who has worked his way up with the San Francisco 49ers staff. (Yes, “Klint Kubiak brother” is now a thing people are trying to understand, and this is why.)

What It Means for Seattle: Justin Outten, Jake Peetz, and the Durde “Hope” Factor

Nemhauser’s tweet also name-dropped two potential Seahawks directions if Kubiak really is gone: Justin Outten and Jake Peetz as candidates to watch, either as internal options or as part of a broader search.

That’s the immediate pressure point for Seattle: replacing an offensive coordinator while preparing for the Super Bowl, then pivoting into roster-building season with a new play-caller and potentially new terminology.

But the bigger “hope” element is on defense. If Kubiak gets the Raiders job, he’ll be building a staff quickly, and Seattle’s concern is that the Seahawks don’t get hit twice. Nemhauser specifically flagged Aden Durde as a coach Seattle has to hope doesn’t become a tag-along loss in the aftermath.

Why the Raiders Want Kubiak and Why Fernando Mendoza Is Suddenly Part of the Story

From the Raiders’ perspective, the logic is straightforward: pair a young offensive-minded head coach with a franchise reset.

Multiple reports have framed Las Vegas as being positioned to draft Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, making the “new coach + new quarterback” storyline one of the biggest league-wide arcs of the week. Mendoza’s name is also spiking in search interest, and he’s already drawing attention with draft-process updates ahead of the combine/pro day stretch.

For Seattle, that part is mostly background, but it explains why the Raiders are motivated to get this wrapped up as soon as league rules allow after the Super Bowl.

What Happens Next

All eyes are on the calendar. If the Seahawks win or lose the Super Bowl, the expectation from the reporting is that the Raiders push to finalize Kubiak immediately afterward.

And for Seattle, the next move is just as urgent: identify the next offensive coordinator — whether that’s a familiar internal name like Outten or Peetz, or a new external hire — while crossing fingers the staff damage stops at one.
