Golden Tempo’s Jockey, Jose Ortiz, Beats Brother to Win 2026 Kentucky Derby

Few jockeys in modern horse racing have risen as quickly and consistently as Jose Ortiz. Known for his calm riding style, sharp race instincts, and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments, Ortiz has become one of the most names in Thoroughbred racing over the last decade – and now his win of the 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs has made history!

Riding Golden Tempo to the finish line, Ortiz crossed the line to win first place in the derby – and he beat his brother, fellow jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., in the process.

Born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Jose Ortiz grew up surrounded by horse racing culture, which led him on his journey to becoming a Kentucky Derby-winning jockey. His older brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., also became one of the top jockeys in North America. Together, the brothers have dominated some of the sport’s biggest races, as evidenced by the fact that Jose Ortiz won first place at the 152nd Kentucky Derby while his brother crossed the finish line in second place riding Renegade.

Jose Ortiz began his professional riding and horse racing career in Puerto Rico before making the move to the United States in 2012. He went on to secure his first American victory shortly after his move to the U.S. and he quickly caught the attention of trainers and thoroughbred owners who could see his potential as a jockey in the sport of horse racing. Similarly, his brother was spotted by owners and trainers like who noticed that the brothers had exceptional talent upon their introduction to elite racing as jockeys.

Jose Ortiz’s breakthrough season as a jockey arrived in 2016 when he led all of North American competitors in wins with 351 victories. That same year established him as one of horse racing’s elite riders and earned him widespread recognition for his tactical intelligence, consistency, and praise for his calm demeanor while riding.

In 2017, Jose captured the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey after leading the nation in earnings and delivering several marquee victories.
