It has been two years since the Pittsburgh Steelers made the move to sign former Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson. After spending the 2024 season as a partial starter in the Steel City, Wilson joined the New York Giants as a veteran backup to then-rookie Jaxson Dart. Now, he is a free agent once again.
Despite a recent visit with the New York Jets, Wilson could be headed for a career off the football field. According to insider Andrew Marchand, the 10-time Pro-Bowler is in talks to replace Matt Ryan as a studio analyst on NFL Today. No decision has officially been reached yet.
Russell Wilson’s Career as an NFL Starter Ended With the Pittsburgh Steelers

As Marchand noted, Wilson is in “deep talks” to join CBS. Perhaps a future beyond football became more real after his time with the Steelers ended. While he had a disappointing two-year stint with the Denver Broncos (2022-2023) before signing with Pittsburgh, his career as a starter seemingly took a downturn in 2024. After being named the starter partially through the 2024 season by former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, Wilson started 11 games and went 6-5.
Even though the Steelers made the playoffs that season before getting crushed by the Baltimore Ravens in the wildcard round, Wilson posted a QBR of just 47.9. While he did throw 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions, he wasn’t particularly prolific. Tomlin and Co. started the season 8-2 and ended up losing six of their final eight games.

Again, Wilson joined the Giants this past year. During his age-37 season, the former Walter Payton Man of the Year ended up playing in a total of six games and made three starts. He went 0-3 and completed just 58% of his passes.
It has been over half a decade since Wilson was in charge of a true contending team. He hasn’t posted a season with at least 10 wins as the starter since 2020. He has been to the playoffs just once in the last five years. While he could be a steady starter in the right situation, his time as a true threat in this league is likely over. So, the question now is whether or not he will have a bronze bust in Canton when all is said and done.
A career record of 121-80-1 as an NFL starter in the regular season and 9-8 in the postseason, Wilson posted at least 10 wins in eight of his 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. If he had retired early after his time in Seattle ended post-2021, he could be a slam-dunk Hall of Famer. But after going 17-28 as a starter in the years since, and becoming more of a backup, his candidacy is up for debate. When you look at the grand scheme of things, the former Wisconsin Badger is a 10-time Pro-Bowler and Super Bowl champion.
However, is that good enough to save him from what has been a tough final few stops of his 14-year career?
