Super Bowl champion Justin Reid sparked major debate across the NFL landscape on Wednesday.Â
He delivered a bold take about Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix during an appearance on Up & Adams with Kay Adams.Â
When Adams asked Reid who deserves the title of the NFLâs best quarterback right now, the former Kansas City Chiefs safety did not hesitate.Â
While acknowledging the presence of his former teammate Patrick Mahomes, he put Bo Nix atop his list. Â
âIn my opinion, it would have been Bo Nix,â Reid said.Â
âI love Josh [Allen] and heâs a prototypical quarterback. But Bo with Sean Payton, heâs young, and I thought he had a super high ceiling.âÂ
Throughout the exchange, Adams repeatedly expressed disbelief at the claim, but Reid never wavered, continuing to circle back to Nix as his answer.
By the end of the conversation, Reid acknowledged that Mahomes still has the highest ceiling in the NFL, but suggested his recent play hasnât reflected that standard.
The fact that a former two-time champion alongside Mahomes immediately named Bo Nix as the NFLâs best quarterback is striking, especially given Reidâs recent history in Kansas City.Â
Justin Reidâs Career With Chiefs, MahomesÂ
Reidâs comments carry significant credibility due to his highly successful tenure with the Chiefs from 2022-2024.Â
After joining Kansas City as a free agent, Reid quickly became a big part of the Chiefs defense under Steve Spagnuolo.Â
He started every game and helped anchor a championship-caliber secondary.Â
During his Chiefs run, Reid won Super Bowls LVII and LVIII, posting career-high numbers in tackles and sacks.Â
He was also a key leader on that defense and was a crucial part of their success.Â
Reid offered rare insight into how Mahomesâ role evolved during their championship years together.Â
âBefore I got there, Patrick was slinging the ball, throwing 500 yards per game,â Reid said.
âBut when I got there and the year we won the Super Bowl, he actually had to take down his quarterback play.âÂ
He added that the way he played âwas more technical, more time management. We had a good defense, and we were winning close games.â
Bo Nix vs. Patrick Mahomes: The Numbers Tell a Story
Statistically, the comparison between Nix and Mahomes over the past two seasons is closer than many might expect.Â
Across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Nix appeared in all 34 games, throwing for 7,706 yards with 54 touchdowns while posting a 90.5 passer rating.Â
He completed roughly 65 percent of his passes and averaged more than 226 passing yards per game.Â
Mahomes, meanwhile, played in 31 games over that same span, throwing for approximately 7,400 yards with 55 touchdowns.Â
He posted a passer rating just north of 91, completed around 67 percent of his passes, and averaged nearly 240 yards per game.Â
Nix also separated himself late in games.Â
He led all NFL quarterbacks this season with eight game-winning drives including the playoffs.Â
For context, Mahomes accomplished the same feat just a year ago with seven.Â
At just 25 years old, Nixâs eight game-winning drives are the most by any quarterback that age or younger in the Super Bowl era.
Reidâs statement is very bold given Mahomesâ status as a three-time Super Bowl champion.
Most people with any real NFL knowledge would probably still choose Patrick Mahomes as the first player to start a franchise with.
Regardless, the fact that Nix is already part of top-quarterback discussions in just his second season is remarkable, and his best football may still be ahead of him.
