Fire shuts down restaurant, gondola at Aspen Mountain ski resort

A small fire sparked Thursday morning at an Aspen Mountain ski resort restaurant, shutting down the building and gondola used to access it, according to the resort.

“The incident was quickly contained, and there were no injuries to employees, guests, or first responders,” Aspen Snowmass spokesperson Hannah Dixon said in an emailed statement to The Denver Post.

The restaurant, The Sundeck at the top of the Silver Queen Gondola, was evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” Dixon said. The Sundeck and Aspen Mountain Club will remain closed until further notice.

Aspen Mountain’s lifts and operations were on hold Thursday morning as crews completed safety sweeps, but Dixon said the resort planned to reopen them as soon as possible.

“We would like to express our gratitude for the swift and professional response of Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol and the Aspen Fire Department,” Dixon stated. “The safety of our employees and guests is our highest priority.”
