Fernando Mendoza’s Brother Makes Official Transfer Decision Hours After Indiana’s Title Win

Less than 24 hours after Indiana’s historic national championship victory, a notable roster move emerged involving a Mendoza brother and the Hoosiers’ quarterback room.

As Yahoo Sports noted, former Indiana quarterback Alberto Mendoza, the younger brother of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, is transferring to Georgia Tech.

Mendoza entered the transfer portal Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after Indiana’s National Championship win over Miami.

He moved quickly to secure his next opportunity, opting to continue his career in the ACC.

With three years of eligibility remaining, the move signals a clear desire to step out of his brother’s shadow and pursue a starting role elsewhere.

Alberto Mendoza’s Career and Why He Entered the Portal

Mendoza arrived at Indiana as part of the program’s rebuild under Curt Cignetti and experienced the Hoosiers’ transformation to the mountain top alongside his brother.

After redshirting, he served as the team’s backup QB throughout this season, appearing in nine games in relief duty.

Despite limited opportunities, Mendoza was efficient when called upon.

He completed 18 of 24 passes (75%) for 286 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception.

He also showcased his athleticism as a runner, adding 190 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries.

However, Indiana’s QB room shifted quickly after the season.

The Hoosiers added former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover through the transfer portal.

With Hoover’s talent and experience, this move effectively closed the path to a starting role in Bloomington for Alberto.

With Hoover arriving and Fernando headed to the NFL, Alberto opted to seek a program where he could establish his own identity.

Rather than waiting another season as a backup, Mendoza chose a clean and fresh start.

Why Georgia Tech Is a Strong Fit

Georgia Tech presents an intriguing landing spot for Mendoza, especially given the program’s offensive identity.

The Yellow Jackets have historically leaned into quarterback mobility, zone-read option concepts, and designed QB runs.

This is an approach that aligns with Mendoza’s skill set.

At 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, Mendoza has the size to withstand contact and the speed to extend plays outside the pocket.

His rushing efficiency at IU suggests he can thrive in an offense that encourages QB runs.

Georgia Tech is also facing a transition at quarterback following the departure of veteran starter Haynes King.

The team’s recent success with Haynes King offers a clear blueprint for how Alberto Mendoza could be utilized.

King thrived as a dual-threat quarterback in Atlanta, throwing for 2,951 yards with 14 touchdowns while completing nearly 70 percent of his passes.

Just as important, his impact on the ground helped define Georgia Tech’s offense.

King rushed 185 times for 953 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground in 2025.

That balance between efficiency as a passer and physicality as a runner mirrors Alberto’s skill set.

In an offense that embraces quarterback involvement in the run game, Mendoza has a realistic path to following in King’s footsteps and carving out a meaningful role at Georgia Tech.
