A former teammate of Luka Doncic, Markieff Morris, has claimed that Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schroder “put his hands” on the Los Angeles Lakers star during their postgame tunnel confrontation on Dec. 28, and he wasn’t just “attempting” to strike the Slovenian, a conclusion drawn by the NBA.
While discussing the incident on “The Morris Code” live stream, the former NBA player claimed an eyewitness contacted him after Schroder physically assaulted Doncic.
“I get a call right away when s**t like this happens,” said Morris, who played with Doncic for two-and-a-half seasons in Dallas.
“This s**t would have never happened if I was still on the Lakers. This man [Schroder] put his hands on him [Doncic]. He touched him up a little bit.”
Luka Doncic vs. Dennis Schroder
Morris added that, knowing Schroder’s character, he wasn’t surprised when he received the call about the Kings guard confronting Doncic.
“I don’t put nothing past [Schrorder],” Morris said. “When I got the call, they said ‘cuz put his hands on him.. From what I was told, they said, big fella [Deandre] Ayton grabbed Schroder and pulled him onto the side.”
For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Anthony Slater also reported that Ayton was the one who calmed down the situation in the tunnel on Dec. 28.
According to Morris, Doncic and Schroder have a bad blood dating back to their days playing in Europe, and Schroder “knows stuff” about the Slovenian that others don’t.
“These guys got history like a mother****** for people who don’t know,” Morris said. “They’ve been going at it every single time they’re on the court.”
Will a Video Get Leaked?
Morris added that the NBA wouldn’t have slapped Schroder with a three-game suspension if he didn’t really put his hands on the Lakers star.
Other retired players, such as Chandler Parsons and Lou Williams, have also suggested that Schroder assaulted Doncic, and there’s video footage buried somewhere.
“You don’t get suspended three games for an attempt — I’ll tell you that,” Williams said on FanDuel TV’s “Run it Back” on Monday.
“There was contact. There was a slap or a punch or something,” Parsons said.
Both ex-players believe the NBA investigated the incident after eyewitnesses saw Schroder put his hands on Doncic.
Earlier, Schroder mocked the NBA’s claim that he was “attempting” to strike Doncic in the tunnel at Crypto.com Arena, insinuating he went through with the assault.
Surely, there’s more to this story, the full details of which will likely be revealed at some point in the future.
Schroder, serving a three-game ban, was not on the court Monday when the Kings hosted the Lakers for the first time since the Dec. 28 game. The Lakers (23-14) suffered a 124-112 loss, their third consecutive defeat, dropping within just half a game outside a top-six playoff berth. Unless they can right the ship, the Lakers could be forced to go through a play-in tournament at the end of the season.
