The New York Jets coaching staff is in upheaval this offseason, with seven open assistant positions on both offense and defense.
Head coach Aaron Glenn will be searching for a new defensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, pass game coordinator, defensive line coach, linebackers coach, and will also have to replace three other assistant defensive coaches.
Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand is expected to remain with the team, but his role is yet to be finalized, per NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
With the Jets on the hunt for virtually a new staff of assistant coaches, one name has come up as a potential senior offensive advisor who could call plays for New York in 2026.
SNY’s Jets insider Connor Hughes reported over the weekend that former NFL quarterback and head coach Frank Reich is a name to keep an eye on.
Boomer Esiason Confirms Jets Interest in Frank Reich
If Hughes’ report wasn’t good enough for some New York Jets fans, former quarterback and close friend of Reich, Boomer Esiason, seemed to confirm the two sides were talking on his WFAN radio show on Monday Morning.
“Yeah, I saw Connor Hughes’ report, and all I can say is that Connor Hughes knows what he’s doing. He’s very much on top of it. I am not a leaking source,” Esiason told co-host Gregg Giannotti
“He’s talking to somebody, whether it be agents or people within that building over there that are giving him good information, solid information, and accurate information, okay?”
Considering all the doom and gloom surrounding the Jets this offseason and their prospects of hiring good assistant coaches, Reich would be an impressive get for Glenn.
Although his most recent stints as a head coach with the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers weren’t exactly successful, his offensive acumen can’t be denied.
He won a Super Bowl as the offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, helping coach backup Nick Foles to a Super Bowl MVP in some of the unlikeliest circumstances.
Although head coach Doug Pederson famously called plays during his tenure in Philadelphia, Reich can certainly still receive some credit for how well the Eagles’ offense functioned without their starting quarterback.
Frank Reich & Boomer Esiason’s Relationship
Whether or not New York Jets fans are interested in bringing Reich aboard to help fix their league-worst offense, it can’t be denied the interest is confirmed.
If anyone knows what’s going on with Reich and his future in coaching, it’s Esiason.
The two were teammates and roommates at the University of Maryland, and Esiason has spoken publicly about their close relationship.
“He’s always been that guy that has gotten his team through it. Buffalo, Maryland. Everywhere he’s been, he’s been in big situations where he’s had to be the guy himself. He knows that feeling of having to overcome things on the field and off of it,” Esiason said of his friend.
“If you asked our coaches how to describe the two of us, they would say I was the rebellious one. He was the one that was easy to get along with. I was probably a little more distracted, if you know what I mean.”
While Reich hasn’t been the most successful coach in his most recent NFL stops, it can’t be denied that he has a way with quarterbacks and building relationships with players.
He could be the exact season-offensive mind the Jets need in 2026.
