Ex-Browns Starting QB Hits Career Low With Non-NFL Opportunity

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson will get a fresh opportunity to revive his career in the United Football League.

Cleveland selected Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he was pressed into action after Deshaun Watson dealt with injuries. Thompson-Robinson made five starts over two seasons, finishing 1-4 while throwing for 880 yards, one touchdown, and 10 interceptions.

Despite early optimism, the Browns ultimately moved on following the 2024 season. Thompson-Robinson was dealt to the Philadelphia Eagles as part of the trade that brought Kenny Pickett to Cleveland. The swap produced little impact for either side. Thompson-Robinson failed to crack Philadelphia’s 53-man roster, while Pickett was later traded by the Browns to the Las Vegas Raiders before the start of the season.

Now, Thompson-Robinson will look to reset his trajectory in the UFL. He was selected on Monday by the Orlando Storm in the league’s quarterback draft. The Storm are a new UFL franchise, and the move gives Thompson-Robinson a chance to refine his game, regain confidence, and potentially work his way back onto the NFL radar.

Thompson-Robinson shared his reaction to the move on social media.

“For those asking what’s next. (Expletive) ain’t gone ever stop,” he said. “Bout to scratch and claw back to where we once was. Don’t trip.”

Browns Still Have Unresolved QB Situation

Thompson-Robinson ultimately proved to be a footnote in the Browns’ ongoing search for stability at quarterback — a search that remains unresolved heading into the offseason.

Cleveland cycled through three starters last season. Veteran Joe Flacco opened the year under center before rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders saw action as QB1.

Sanders represents the closest thing the Browns have to a potential long-term option, though his future with the organization is far from settled. The rookie started seven games and finished 3-4, throwing for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Despite the extended audition, Cleveland stopped short of making any commitment to Sanders as the season came to a close.

“I think we saw a lot of progress with Shedeur this year. I think that’s both mentally, physically, playing the position. He’s still very much a work in progress like many rookie quarterbacks are,” Browns general manager Andrew Berry said. “Now that all being said, we’re going to do our work on the quarterback market. It’s too important of a position and it’s something that has to be solidified. I can’t sit here and tell you today whether the solution for or the starter in 2026 is internal or external. But it’s something that we’re going to work through over the next several weeks.”

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Not Concerned About Future

Sanders’ path in Cleveland was anything but straightforward, beginning with his slide to the fifth round of the draft. He steadily worked his way up the depth chart, taking advantage of opportunity when it came and ultimately earning his chance to start.

Now entering the offseason with questions surrounding his future, Sanders isn’t dwelling on what comes next. Instead, he believes his time on the field spoke for itself.

“I think I did what I was able to do, and I definitely grew from a lot of things, and I got experience now,” Sanders said. “Confidence-wise, I’m the same — I’m there. But that’s not in my hands. That’s not my decision. I can’t speak on what other people feel.”

The Browns hold the No. 6 overall pick in the draft and could decide to target a quarterback. Gabriel and veteran Deshaun Watson are also under contract for next season.
