When Tina Fey talks about the best hosts in âSaturday Night Liveâ history, one name still stands out years later â Tom Brady.
Speaking during a recent appearance at The History Talks event in Philadelphia on April 18, Fey reflected on working with the former New England Patriots quarterback and explained why athletes like Brady often thrive in the high-pressure world of live sketch comedy.
Why Athletes Like Tom Brady Excel on âSNLâ
Fey, a longtime writer and cast member on âSaturday Night Live,â said athletes consistently outperform traditional Hollywood stars in one key area: coachability.
âThe thing about Tom and so many other athletes, we always would say at SNL that athletes make the best hosts because one, nothing is at stake for them, like they donât care if it goes well, theyâre not trying to get a movie out of it,â Fey said.
That mindset creates a major advantage.
Unlike actors who may be focused on promoting a project, athletes come in with a team-first mentality â one built on taking direction, adjusting quickly, and executing under pressure.
âYeah, Do That Fasterâ: Bradyâs Coachable Approach
Fey pointed to a clear difference between athletes and actors when it comes to feedback.
âYou can go up to an athlete host and be like, âYeah, do that faster.â Theyâre like, âYes, maâam,ââ she said. âYou canât go on to like an Oscar-winning film actor and say like, â[Be] faster.ââ
That willingness to take direction â something Brady built his entire NFL career on â translated seamlessly to the SNL stage.
The same coachability that defined Bradyâs two-decade run with the Patriots showed up immediately in a completely different setting.
A âRelaxed Readinessâ That Stood Out
Fey also highlighted what she described as a âstate of relaxed readiness,â something she believes separates athletes from other hosts.
She said athletes are uniquely prepared to handle live pressure without overthinking it.
âSo like theyâre just kind of chill,â Fey said, noting that athletes approach big moments the same way they prepare for games.
That balance â calm but fully locked in â became a signature of Bradyâs career, especially in high-stakes situations.
Brady Admitted the Experience Wasnât Easy
Despite Feyâs praise, Brady has acknowledged that hosting âSaturday Night Liveâ pushed him outside his comfort zone.
In a 2022 conversation with SNL cast member Kenan Thompson, Brady said he felt a âlittle panickyâ before the live show began as last-minute changes were made.
âI remember when we did Saturday Night Live together and we did all the skits on that pre-show, the live one before the live [show],â Brady said. âAnd then afterward, we went up to Lorne [Michaels]â office.â
Brady added that Michaels reminded him of someone very familiar.
âThat was like [Bill] Belichick,â he said, referencing his longtime Patriots head coach.
With just minutes before going live, Brady said the pressure hit quickly.
âI remember thinking, âI need tequila, I gotta get down, I gotta get changed. I need two shots of tequila before I go on. Like, letâs get this thing going,ââ he said.
From the Field to the Stage
Brady hosted âSaturday Night Liveâ in 2005 during the showâs 30th season â and, according to Fey, left a lasting impression.
For her, it wasnât surprising.
The same traits that made Brady one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history â discipline, adaptability, and composure â translated directly to a completely different kind of performance.
âIn my mind, Iâm Tom Brady,â Fey joked.
Itâs a line that lands as both humor and insight â a reminder that elite-level preparation doesnât always stay confined to one arena.
