A former Cleveland Browns bust announced he’s calling it quits on his new squad.
Perrion Winfrey — a former All-UFL selection — was originally taken in the fourth round by Cleveland out of Oklahoma in 2022. He was cut by the Browns after some off-field troubles. Winfrey appeared in 13 games as a rookie.
Looking for a career revival, Winfrey went to the UFL. After a strong stint with the Birmingham Stallions last season, he landed a two-year, $2 million deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
That opportunity never fully materialized. Winfrey appeared in just one game during the 2025 season due to injury and was waived in March. Seeking another shot, he returned to Birmingham for the current UFL campaign. The reunion has quickly unraveled.
Winfrey announced Sunday on social media that he is stepping away from the team, taking aim at the coaching staff in the process.
“Sorry Stallions nation that staff ain’t it! I’d rather workout at home than deal with that madness. Giddy up. Good luck this season,” Winfrey said on X.
Stallions Led by Former NFL QB AJ McCarron
The Stallions are now led by former NFL quarterback AJ McCarron, who took over as head coach in December following the departure of Skip Holtz, a three-time champion with the franchise.
The transition has been rocky. Birmingham sits at 1-3 on the season and has been outscored 85-65, struggling to find consistency on either side of the ball. The Stallions were blanked in their home opener by the expansion Orlando Storm, 16-0.
“I’ll keep it short and sweet: Embarrassing. Simple as that,” McCarron said after the loss. “Listen, I come from this state, and I know what football means. That’s why I said embarrassing. I don’t think I’ve ever been shut out in my life. It’s on me. I’m the head coach.”
Former Browns QB Lands with Stallions
Winfrey isn’t the only Browns connection in Birmingham. Following a shutout loss, the Stallions made a move for former Cleveland quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who had been serving as the backup for the Orlando Storm.
Birmingham acquired Thompson-Robinson in a trade with Orlando, sending quarterback Matt Corral and defensive end Amani Bledsoe in return. The deal adds new blood center but further thins out the Stallions’ defensive front, especially with Winfrey stepping away.
Thompson-Robinson, who made five starts for Cleveland across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, was widely expected to take over as Orlando’s starter. Instead, he lost the job to Jack Plummer, who has emerged as one of the UFL’s most efficient passers. Orlando is off to a 4-0 start behind Plummer, who has thrown for 853 yards with seven touchdowns and just one interception.
The Browns selected Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round (No. 140 overall) of the 2023 draft out of UCLA, where he finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in total offense.
He made an early impression as a rookie, winning the backup role behind Deshaun Watson after a strong preseason. But when Watson went down with a shoulder injury and Thompson-Robinson was thrust into action, the results were uneven.
He completed 121 of 230 passes for 880 yards during his time in Cleveland, throwing one touchdown against 10 interceptions.
