Draymond Green Delivers Massive Take on Derrick Rose and Michael Jordan

The Chicago Bulls retired Derrick Rose’s jersey on Jan. 24. From now one, Rose’s No. 1 jersey will forever hang in the raptures in the United Center. Rose’s jersey hangs up there with another Bulls great, Michael Jordan.

Jordan, who is regarded by some as the greatest player ever, had a remarkable career with the Bulls and so did Rose. Golden State Warriors‘ Draymond Green spoke about Rose’s jersey retirement in his podcast “The Draymond Green Show.”

Green talked about the impact both Rose and Jordan had in Chicago and he made a strong take saying that Rose means more to the city of Chicago than Jordan.

“With all due respect to MJ, I love MJ and we all wanted to be like Mike and I still love Mike,” Green said on his podcast. “Mike doesn’t mean more to the city of Chicago than Derrick Rose, that’s just facts.” Green is someone who is not afraid to speak his mind, and he made it known how he felt about the impact Rose and Jordan have had in Chicago.

Though Rose never won an NBA title during his career, he can say that he and Jordan have something in common. For a player to have their jersey retired by a franchise, they had to make a significant impact, and that’s what both players did.

Rose, a Chicago native, was selected by the Bulls with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. It was only fitting for the Bulls to draft the hometown kid. Rose spent seven seasons in Chicago and won an MVP award during his time there. He also made three All-Star appearances and won the Rookie of the Year award in 2009. During his time with the Bulls, Rose took the league by storm and established himself as one of the best. He averaged 19.7 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds as a member of the Bulls.

Jordan had a memorable career during his time in Chicago. He won six titles, five league MVP awards, and was a 12-time All-Star as a member of the Bulls. Those are just a few of his accomplishments while he was in Chicago. Jordan became an all-time great as a member of the Bulls and he was a proven winner. He finished his career with Chicago averaging 31.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.4 assists.

It means a lot for a player to get drafted by the team of the city they grew up in. Rose was filled with emotion during his jersey retirement. He became the fifth player in franchise history to have his jersey retired.

“This journey was never about me,” Rose said. “It was about creating the synergy that somehow people from the city can pull from. And somehow I was that beacon or that vessel for that — from hooping.” Rose left it all on the court when he played and he brought excitement to Chicago and embraced the city as well. Just like Jordan, Rose made a huge impact on the city and the organization.
