News broke on April 17th that the sale of the San Diego Padres is being finalized to billionaire Jose E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones. The Wall Street Journal first reported the sale, which will need to be approved in June at the MLB owners’ meetings.
Jose E. Feliciano is a Puerto Rican businessman, investor, and a co-owner of Chelsea FC. Not to be confused with fellow Puerto Rican, the musician Jose Feliciano, who recorded the hit Christmas song Feliz Navidad, Jose E. Feliciano is worth $3.9 billion according to Forbes.
The 53-year-old is a self-made billionaire who got his start working for Goldman Sachs and made his fortune through private equity investments. The Princeton Graduate was part of a group that bought Chelsea FC in 2022, and now buys the Padres at a record price.
The Padres Cost Feliciano More Than Any MLB Team Ever Has
Previously, the most expensive purchase of an MLB team was in 2020, when Steve Cohen bought the Mets for $2.4 billion.
The sale of the Padres blows the Mets’ sale away in proportion. San Diego is reportedly being sold for $3.9 billion, by far the most expensive purchase of any MLB franchise.
Feliciano and Jones reportedly outbid three other bidders, according to The Athletic.
While San Diego has never won a World Series and is not regarded as a traditional baseball powerhouse, they are enjoying a stretch of winning seasons and has a talented roster full of well-paid all-stars. The Padres are the only major professional sports team in San Diego.
What Could This Sale Mean for the Padres Roster
The Padres have an expensive roster, with four players locked up to long-term deals of eight or more years. Three of those four players (Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Fernando Tatis Jr) are owed at least $200 million in the next decade. That’s a lot of money tied up in the clubs’ veteran core.
There had been previous speculation that the club may attempt to move off some of their big contracts, perhaps even trading Fernando Tatis Jr, depending on who bought the team.
However, if the spending habits of Chelsea F.C. over the past few years are any indication of what Feliciano might do in San Diego, the Padres might be able to look forward to even more spending on the roster in the coming years.
According to BBC Sports, Chelsea’s 2024 roster was the most expensive ever assembled. Of course, Feliciano is just a part of Chelsea’s ownership group, and it’s not a guarantee that the spending habits of a soccer team across the pond will match the spending of a mid-market baseball team in southern California.
Still, it’s a good sign for Padres fans hoping to see their team continue to invest in winning. In a division that has been won by the Dodgers in 12 of the past 13 seasons, San Diego will have to continue spending money to compete and contend for an NL West title.
It’s also worth noting that even if Feliciano does intend to spend big money in San Diego as Chelsea has in the past few seasons, it’s still not a guarantee of success. Chelsea has finished 3rd, 12th, 6th, and 4th in the Premier League over the past four seasons. Notably, they did win their second Club World Cup Title over Paris Saint-Germain in 2025.
