Dodgers Provide Important Edwin Díaz Injury Update During Mets Series

Billion dollar payroll. Three words to describe the series between the 2026 Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.

As the Mets rolled into Hollywood on Monday Night to face the reigning World Series Champions, their $502.9 million dollar roster and the Dodgers $574.8 million dollar roster marks the most expensive series in MLB history. The team’s combined payroll totals to $1.07 billion, according to Sportrac.

The combined 2026 salaries of Shohei Ohtani, Kyle Tucker, Juan Soto, and Bo Bichette is more than the total payroll of 14 MLB teams, per ESPN.

While both aggressive in the offseason, the Mets let a couple of their 2025 stars go. Including, recently acquired by the Dodgers, shut-down closing pitcher, Edwin Díaz.

Díaz played for the Mets for seven seasons before getting snatched up by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2026. His debut against his former team is highly anticipated. However, after monitored velocity and a lingering knee injury, Díaz’s debut may be hindered.

Dave Roberts Provides Injury Update With Díaz’s Velocity Dip In First Blown Save

On Friday, April 10, Edwin Díaz recorded his first blown save of 2026 against the Texas Rangers.

The typically dominate closing pitcher averaged 95.5 MPH with his four-seam fastball, which was only the sixth time in his career. Through his six appearances with the Dodgers, Díaz is averaging a four-seamer of 95.8 MPH, which is a significant dip from 2025 where he was throwing 97.2 MPH.

After the game on Friday, both Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts and Díaz insisted that the closer wasn’t dealing with any physical or mechanical issues. However, in a press conference Monday night, Roberts left what felt like a cryptic message about Díaz’s ‘day-to-day’ injury.

“Players want to play,” Roberts said. “They want to perform. Sometimes they’re their worst enemy. I think that’s another reason why we’re kind of just, again, treading lightly is the word I’m using. Because you’ve got to respect that they want to be out there. But then we all kind of end up with the short straw if the player goes down.”

Díaz has not pitched since Friday in his first blown save as Dodgers. He gave up a two-run home run to Evan Carter and a game-tying single to Ezequiel Duran, and now sports a 6.00 ERA.

“Just kind of [him] saying he just didn’t feel right,” Roberts said of where the concern with Díaz started. “And talking about some of the things before, the track record, the knee and all that stuff. So I’d like to think that’s behind us. But that was more the genesis behind it.”

While Dodgers fans are crossing their fingers to hear the trumpets blast in their home stadium against the Mets, it seems like Díaz is being kept on close watch for the time being.

Which Dodgers’ Pitchers Are On The Injury List?

While Edwin Díaz isn’t necessarily injured, and is certainly not on the Dodgers’ injury list, there are quite a few notable pitchers on the IL.
