Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman shared personal news Tuesday as the team opened a key road series against the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers will have Freeman back at first base soon and he is coming off a high point in his personal life. As the Dodgers got set to open a three-game series against their traditional rivals, the San Francisco Giants, on Tuesday, Freeman and his wife, Chelsea, announced some big personal news.
The couple welcomed the arrival of their first daughter, London Rosemary Joy Freeman, born April 19 via surrogate.
The birth makes London the couple’s fourth child and their first girl. Freeman and Chelsea are already parents to three boys, Charlie, Brandon and Maximus.
The Dodgers placed Freeman on the paternity list ahead of Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, with the three-day maximum window making Wednesday the latest possible date for his return. Los Angeles is currently in San Francisco for the series against the Giants, and manager Dave Roberts confirmed the timeline, according to Dodger Blue‘s Matthew Moreno.
“We expect him back at some point in San Francisco,” Roberts said.
Freddie Freeman’s Family Story Behind the Daughter’s Birth
The road to London’s arrival spans years. The Freemans have been open about their fertility struggles, having tried for years after their eldest son Charlie was born in 2016. They pursued surrogacy, and in a twist nobody planned, Chelsea also became pregnant at the same time. Brandon arrived in December 2020; Maximus, carried by the surrogate, arrived in February 2021. The family calls them “twins with a twist,” as Freeman explained to ESPN.
The couple announced a new pregnancy in late February, then posted a baseball-themed gender reveal video three weeks later. The Freeman boys participated in the reveal, announcing they were getting a sister in a moment the family described as taking “one last swing” at having a girl.
Freeman also withdrew from Team Canada’s World Baseball Classic roster this spring for what he described only as a personal reason, according to Dodger Blue.
“Be in Puerto Rico and be that far from my family, I need to be close to California, and that’s all I’ll say,” Freeman said at DodgerFest.
Freeman’s Return Comes as Dodgers Face San Francisco
With Freeman away, the Dodgers recalled Ryan Ward from Triple-A Oklahoma City to cover first base. Ward, making his MLB debut against the Rockies on Sunday, went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Los Angeles’s loss, according to Dodger Blue.
Freeman’s return strengthens a lineup in need of its anchor. He entered 2026 as the active hits leader in Major League Baseball at 2,431 career hits, and has since pushed that total to 2,455 through the early weeks of the season.
The Giants series at Oracle Park wraps up with a Thursday afternoon game, meaning Freeman could see action in multiple contests before the trip concludes. His presence gives the 16-6 Dodgers a significant upgrade, if the team with the best record in baseball needs one, heading into one of the National League West’s biggest rivalry matchups of the young season.
The Freeman family is far from alone in the baby news department this spring. First baseman Max Muncy and his wife welcomed a daughter in January. Outfielder Kiké Hernández and his wife, Mariana Vicente Hernández, had a son named Santiago José in February. And offseason addition Kyle Tucker and his wife recently had their first child, a boy, according to Dodgers Nation via Yahoo Sports.
