Boy, 7, dies of apparent drowning in Lake in the Hills

Foul play is not suspected following the death of a missing 7-year-old boy who was pulled from a retention pond Wednesday evening, police in northwest Lake in the Hills said.

Officers responded shortly before 6 p.m. to a report of a missing child in the 300 block of Steeplechase Way, according to the Village of Lake in the Hills Police Department. Family members told police they had seen the child a short time earlier.

While searching for the child, an officer found the 7-year-old unresponsive in a nearby retention pond, pulled the child from the water and began life-saving efforts, police said.

Paramedics from the Huntley Fire Protection District arrived within minutes and continued efforts to save the child before taking the child to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. Police declined to release his name.

The child’s death is under investigation by Lake in the Hills police and the McHenry County coroner’s office. The coroner’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.


Foul play was not suspected, police said.
