The Chicago Cubs have had an up-and-down start to the 2026 season. At the time of this writing, they have a 6-6 record and are at the bottom of the National League Central. They have been trending in the right direction as of late, though, as they have won each of their last two games.
The Cubs will be looking to build on that momentum as they kick off their three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday afternoon. They will be getting one of their top players back for this series, as star slugger Seiya Suzuki has been activated from the injured list. This is certainly good news for the Cubs.
However, in response to Suzuki returning to the lineup, the Cubs have designated one of their veteran players for assignment.
Chicago Cubs Designate Outfielder Dylan Carlson for Assignment
According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, the Cubs have designated outfielder Dylan Carlson for assignment with Suzuki coming off the injured list for Chicago.
Carlson played in three games this season with the Cubs before being designated for assignment, where he went 0-for-4 at the plate and struck out twice. This was after the seven-year veteran outfielder had six home runs, nine doubles, 20 RBIs, and a .203 batting average in 83 games for the Baltimore Orioles during this past season.
Carlson’s best season in the majors was back during the 2021 campaign, as he set career highs with 18 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a .266 batting average. He has had trouble replicating that kind of production at the plate ever since.
Teams looking for a depth outfielder who has a good amount of major league experience could consider bringing in Carlson.
Cubs’ Getting Major Boost With Suzuki Returning to the Lineup
With Suzuki being one of the Cubs’ most important players, there is no question that they will be getting a major boost with him returning to the lineup. The 5-foot-11 outfielder is coming off a strong 2025 season with the Cubs, as he set new career highs with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs in 151 games. This is after he had 21 home runs, 73 RBIs, and a .283 batting average in 132 games for the Cubs during the 2024 season.
With the Cubs looking to continue to move up the standings, it is certainly good news that Suzuki is now off the injured list. The Cubs will be looking for him to make a big impact for them in his return, and it will be intriguing to see how he performs this campaign from here.
