Commanders’ Jayden Daniels Makes Thoughts on Stefon Diggs Extremely Clear

The Washington Commanders knew for much of the offseason that they were going to need a true No. 2 wide receiver to come in and help out on offense after moving on from Deebo Samuel. After months of speculation, the Commanders finally managed to find that guy when they signed Stefon Diggs in free agency earlier this week.

The addition of Diggs is geared towards giving quarterback Jayden Daniels as much help as possible on offense, as he will team up with Terry McLaurin to form a talented one-two punch at wide receiver. Daniels and Diggs are in the early stages of developing their relationship, and the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year didn’t hold back when recently discussing his thoughts on the move.

Jayden Daniels Gushes Over Stefon Diggs

The Commanders made a move to pair up Samuel with McLaurin last offseason, but with injuries plaguing this unit, they never really managed to get off the ground. Washington allowed Samuel to return to the San Francisco 49ers in free agency, but with him gone, that meant the front office would have to find a replacement for him.

While rumors continued to link them to disgruntled 49ers wideout Brandon Aiyuk, the team zeroed in on Diggs, who authored a strong bounce-back campaign with the New England Patriots in 2025. Even though he spent much of the offseason recovering from a torn ACL, Diggs suited up for all 17 of New England’s games last year, catching 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.

Diggs worked as the Pats’ No. 1 wide receiver last year, but he will comfortably slot in behind McLaurin on the depth chart now that he’s with the Commanders. In order to ensure this marriage goes smoothly, Daniels and Diggs need to be on the same page, and while they have only spent a couple of days together, it appears that things have gotten off to a good start here.

“I think he does a great job of being definitive with his routes,” Daniels said of Diggs on “Inside Training Camp.” “He’s friendly when he comes out the top of his routes. Great hands, he catches everything. He’s super smart. He knows coverage; he’s not going to run a route to get covered.”

Commanders Need a Big Season From Stefon Diggs

Daniels proved as a rookie that, when he’s healthy, he can win games for Washington on his own. It helps when he is able to move the ball in the air, though, which is why McLaurin and Diggs are so important. The Commanders want to run the ball, but in order to open up lanes on the ground, they need to establish themselves in the passing game.

Whereas McLaurin is known for ripping off big plays, Diggs makes his money on shorter-to-intermediate routes, meaning he will profile as more of a safe option for Daniels. Things didn’t work with Samuel last year, but if Diggs can pick up right where he left off last season, this could end up being one of the shrewdest additions of the offseason across the entire league.
