Chiefs Looking to Steal Bears Coach After Latest News

Teams across the NFL aren’t wasting any time after the Chicago Bears were knocked out of the playoffs, as they prepare to try to steal some promising coaches from the Bears’ sideline.

The Bears exceeded many people’s expectations this season after winning the NFC North and beating the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round, and many point to the new coaching staff as a major factor in why the Bears were able to accomplish those feats.

Now, just one day after the heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the overtime playoff loss, the Kansas City Chiefs have requested to interview Bears’ running backs coach Eric Bieniemy for their offensive coordinator role.

Bieniemy helped turn the Bears into one of the best run teams in the NFL, as Chicago was the only team in the NFL this past season with not one, but two 750+ yard rushers, with D’Andre Swift running for 1,087 yards and rookie seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai rushing for 783 yards.

“Swift to me, looked like the person I saw coming out of Georgia,” Bieniemy said. “He has been challenged, but I remember a kid who ran hard, did a great job of picking up blitzes and did a great job receiving out of the backfield. That’s the person that I know.”

Bieniemy, who joined the Bears this season, was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018-2022. In his final season as the Chiefs’ OC, Bieniemy helped Kansas City lead the league in scoring (29.2 points per game), and Mahomes earned his second MVP award.

There might be some confusion because the Chiefs still have Matt Nagy as the offensive coordinator, but according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Nagy has an expiring contract, and Kansas City is expected to move forward and find a new OC.

The combination of familiarity, experience, and accolades makes Bieniemy at the top of the Chiefs’ OC list.

Other Bears Assistant Coaches Expected to Garner Interest

Bieniemy won’t be the only Bears coach to garner interest. Bears’ passing game coordinator Al Harris is also expected to garner a ton of interest from other teams.

Harris helped the Bears lead the league in interceptions with 23 during the regular season. He was also a major reason why Nahshon Wright, who signed a one-year, $1.1 million deal, became one of the top cornerbacks this season with five interceptions and two forced fumbles.

With multiple teams expected to lose or fire their defensive coordinators, Harris could leave to become a DC elsewhere. Perhaps, back to the Dallas Cowboys, where he was the defensive backs coach and assistant head coach from 2020 to 2024.

Nothing has changed yet for the Bears, but they will have to prepare to bring in new coaches as teams continue to reach out for interviews.
