Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has been an NFL head coach before, and it looks like he may be again sooner than later.
Nagy, who left Kansas City in 2018 after his first year as the team’s offensive coordinator to take the lead job with the Chicago Bears, returned to the Chiefs after four seasons at the helm in the Windy City. He finished his run there with a regular season record of 34-31, including one NFC North Division title and two trips to the playoffs (0-2).
At one point, there were nine head coaching jobs vacant around the NFL this cycle, though two have already closed. The New York Giants hired John Harbaugh first, followed by the Atlanta Falcons inking Kevin Stefanski to a deal over the weekend.
Stefanski’s hire was bad news for the Chiefs in terms of keeping Nagy on the roster, as Stefanski was also a top candidate for the Tennessee Titans‘ open job. Tennessee is probably Nagy’s best chance, as the Titans new general manager (as of January 2025) is Mike Borgonzi, formerly the assistant GM in Kansas City.
“Sources: The #Titans are beginning to finalize their HC candidates — with Jeff Hafley, Matt Nagy and Kevin Stefanski all scheduled for in-person interviews next week,” league insider Jordan Schultz reported. “Hafley, I’m told, is a likely finalist everywhere he’s interviewed — including the Dolphins, Raiders, Steelers, Cardinals, Browns — should he choose to proceed with all six.”

Considering Stefanski is off the board, Hafley is desired to some degree by essentially every team still looking for a new head coach and given Nagy’s relationship with Borgonzi, one could argue that Nagy is actually now the frontrunner in Tennessee heading into the second round of candidate interviews.
His hiring by the Titans would leave Kansas City seeking a new OC at a pivotal time in the franchise’s transition to the second half of quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ career.
Mahomes is currently rehabilitating an ACL and LCL tear he suffered in Week 15 and could miss the first part of the 2026 regular season depending on how his knee responds to treatment.
There is also the question of Travis Kelce’s future with the franchise. His contract is up this offseason after 13 years with the team and retirement is on the table as he continues through his late 30s.
Patrick Mahomes Trusts Andy Reid to Replace Matt Nagy if Necessary

Mahomes spoke with media members last week about his rehab process and addressed the potential departure of Nagy to the Titans or elsewhere.
“I know coach [Andy] Reid, if coach [Nagy] is able to get another job — a head coaching job — he’ll have a good plan of who he wants to bring in,” Mahomes said. “For me, I just want someone that loves football, that cares about football, that wants to give everything they can to win.”
Mahomes expanded upon what he wants in a new OC in a general sense.
“To hold people accountable, and then to bring new ideas every single day — I think that is something we have to continue to do if you want to continue to be great in this league,” Mahomes added.
