Jed Hoyer and the Chicago Cubs are in the middle of a strong stretch of play following the MLB trade deadline. During that deadline, the front office got aggressive in pursuit of a World Series run this season.
Among the notable additions were starting pitchers Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes. Both players will be crucial for the postseason. However, the Cubs will also face the risk of losing both of them in free agency, as they are both in the final year of their contracts.
It would not be surprising to see Chicago try to re-sign at least one of them. But, there is a very good chance the Cubs will need more starting pitching during the MLB offseason.
With that in mind, Chicago has already received a blockbuster prediction to make a huge signing in free agency.
Chicago Cubs Land $90 Million Free Agency Prediction
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller has already dropped a bombshell prediction for the Cubs. He believes the team will end up being the suitor for San Diego Padres impending free agent starter Casey Mize.
Miller predicted that Chicago would sign Mize to a five-year, $90 million contract.
“Alternatively, the Cubs might just give Mize a fully guaranteed multi-year deal and hope for the best, given their rotation outlook with Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes and David Peterson all headed for free agency while Justin Steele and Colin Rea each have one year of team control remaining,” Miller wrote.
Mize would be a nice addition for the Cubs. He was overshadowed by Tarik Skubal for most of his tenure with the Tigers, but has produced solid numbers in Detroit. Before the trade deadline, he was traded to the Padres.
This season, the 29-year-old pitcher has made 17 starts. He has compiled a 4-7 record to go along with a 3.40 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, a 3.9 K/BB ratio, and 90 innings pitched.
The Cubs’ Rotation Could Be Problematic
As mentioned above by Miller, Chicago has a lot of starting pitching talent set to hit the open market.
Gausman, Holmes, David Peterson, Matthew Boyd, and Shota Imanaga are all scheduled to reach free agency. Justin Steele and Cade Horton project to be the two best starters for the Cubs in 2027.
If Chicago can re-sign either Gausman or Holmes, that would be a nice step. Adding Mize would be extremely helpful as well.
Only time will tell what Hoyer and the front office choose to do. Mize is a name worth keeping a very close eye on as the kind of name the Cubs could target when free agency arrives.
