Celtics Projected to Add ‘Tremendous’ National Champion to Upgrade Frontcourt

The Boston Celtics are gearing up for a first-round playoff clash against the Philadelphia 76ers, with their immediate focus firmly set on chasing a second NBA Championship in three years.

At the same time, with the NBA Draft lottery now finalized, there is a growing sense that attention across the league is beginning to drift toward what could be a defining offseason.

Boston’s recent success in developing contributors such as Payton Pritchard and Baylor Scheierman has only reinforced the value of identifying and nurturing cost-controlled talent within a championship-caliber roster.

Boston Celtics Could Balance Title Push With Long-Term Roster Planning

With Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Derrick White already accounting for significant portions of the salary cap, and Nikola Vucevic potentially joining that group if he re-signs in unrestricted free agency, Boston’s financial flexibility could soon tighten considerably.

That reality places even greater emphasis on the NBA Draft as a key mechanism for sustaining success.

For a team built to contend year after year, the draft offers a reliable pathway to add affordable, high-upside talent without compromising long-term roster balance.

The Celtics retain control of their future draft capital and are currently projected to select toward the back end of the first round.

In his latest mock draft, Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin O’Connor has Boston selecting Michigan forward Morez Johnson Jr. with the 27th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

“Michigan is filled with so much star power that Johnson is the guy who often gets overlooked nationally,” O’Connor wrote. “He’s a 250-pound wrecking ball with surprisingly soft hands and the defensive IQ to guard 1 through 5 in a switch-heavy scheme.”

“The Celtics have targeted team-first guys like Johnson in recent years, so he’d fit the profile here after proving himself as the connective tissue of the best team in the country.”

“He isn’t quite big enough to be a true center and not yet proven enough as a shooter to guarantee he spaces the floor. But the Celtics can be patient and are proving to have a strong developmental program to help resolve any concerns.”

Johnson’s Versatility and Upside Align With Boston’s Needs

Across 40 games this season, Johnson averaged 13.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 blocks, while shooting an efficient 62.3% from the field.

He also showed flashes of perimeter development, converting 12 of his 35 three-point attempts (34.3%).

The 20-year-old played a key role in Michigan’s 2026 NCAA Championship run, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, one steal, and two blocks on 71.4% shooting in the title game win over UConn.

Standing at 6-foot-9, Johnson began his collegiate career at Illinois, where he averaged 7.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks before a wrist injury cut his freshman season short in February 2025.

A transfer to Michigan proved pivotal, accelerating his development on both ends of the floor.

“He’s tremendous as a post defender, flying around in help and showcasing switchability on the perimeter,” The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie recently wrote. “He’s an incredibly versatile player on that end.”

For a Boston Celtics team navigating the balance between immediate title contention and long-term sustainability, prospects like Johnson represent more than just depth.

He profiles as a versatile, team-first contributor who could grow into a valuable piece alongside Boston’s established core while fitting seamlessly into the franchise’s long-term vision.
