Storms possible as ‘summer-like’ conditions give way to much cooler temperatures Saturday in Chicago area

“Summer-like” conditions bringing temperatures nearing 80 and a threat for severe storms Friday will give way to much cooler temperatures as the weekend progresses.

Highs were expected to reach 81 degrees Friday with a threat for large hail and damaging winds between 40 and 50 mph approaching by the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

“This could be our last summer-like day here for a little while,” said Kevin Donofrio, a meteorologist with the weather service.

By Saturday, the high is expected be 30 degrees cooler than Friday, and by Saturday night temperatures could hover just above the freezing point, according to the weather service. A slight chance for rain was possible and wind gusts were expected to reach 30 mph.

Donofrio noted that a cold front moving through the central part of the United States is responsible for the approaching storm system and swing in temperature.

“Temperatures in the northern plains are in the 20s and 30s and that’s pushing in our direction,” Donofrio said.

Conditions are expected to be calm Sunday and Monday and highs in the 70s were expected to return by Tuesday.
