Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow will not have to worry about Myles Garrett anymore after the Cleveland Browns traded the veteran pass rusher this past offseason. However, the Browns did acquire Jared Verse in that trade, who isn’t Garrett but can get to the QB.
Last season with the Los Angeles Rams, Verse played 856 total snaps, leading to an 83.9 overall PFF defensive grade. Moreover, Verse generated 80 total pressures, eight sacks, 52 hurries, 20 QB hits, and three forced fumbles. Meanwhile, against the run, he recorded 38 solo tackles.
As a result, Verse isn’t Garrett, but he can get to the quarterback and make him uncomfortable. While speaking to CBS Sports on Aug. 7, Verse noted what he’s looking for when trying to sack Burrow now that he’ll see the Bengals star twice a season.
“Joe Burrow, he’s like a jack of all trades,” Verse said. “He can run the ball, but he’s a traditional quarterback in the fact that he can sit back in that pocket and kill it if you let him. To get to him, you just gotta attack one thing at a time. You can’t think too much ahead of time. You can’t be too focused on, ‘Oh, he might run. Oh, he might do this.’”
Jared Verse Keeps His Plan for Sacking Joe Burrow Simple
Moreover, Verse noted that when it comes to trying to sack Burrow, he needs to keep it simple and not overthink the situation.
“You just gotta attack your O-line, beat your O-line, and react off what he does off that,” Verse added. “If he stays in the pocket, go get the hit, go get the sack. If he doesn’t, if he rolls out, chase him down. But him, you gotta be able to react to him.”
Verse and the Browns defense can’t afford to have Burrow have a comfortable time in the pocket. As Verse mentioned, the Bengals signal-caller will make an opposing defense pay if they give him time.
Last season with the Bengals, Burrow played 478 snaps, leading to a 91.8 overall PFF grade. Moreover, he threw for 1,809 yards and 17 touchdowns against five interceptions while recording 18 big-time throws and two turnover-worthy plays.
Bengals Under Pressure to Reach Playoffs During 2026 Season
Going into the 2026 NFL season, the Bengals are likely facing the most pressure of any team to reach the playoffs. After three straight seasons of missing the playoffs, the Bengals made aggressive moves to show Burrow the team is serious about winning while he is in his prime.
Nonetheless, there’s still the possibility of missing the playoffs. With that possibility in mind, NFL reporter Dan Graziano shared his thoughts on Burrow’s future, stating that it would be a doomsday scenario for Cincinnati to miss the playoffs this upcoming season.
“If they miss the playoffs again, then that would be, we talked about how they’re the only team that didn’t change head coaches,” Graziano said on the July 21 edition of “Get Up.”
“That could certainly be on the table. And the chatter about whether or should Joe Burrow leave Cincinnati. That’s going to be a big topic next offseason. This is a crucial year for the Cincinnati Bengals.”
