Braves Make $27 Million Decision on Ace Chris Sale

If there’s been one stabilizing factor to the Atlanta Braves rotation in the past few years, it’s been the team’s ace, Chris Sale. Set to become a free agent after the 2026 season, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Chris Sale and the Braves are in agreement on a one-year, $27 million contract extension, which includes a club option for $30 million in 2028.

The nine-time All-Star will presumably remain in a Braves uniform for the next three seasons, which is huge for Atlanta, as they continue to battle rotation inconsistency.

Braves Ink Chris Sale to One-Year Extension

This Chris Sale one-year extension for $27 million is good news for Braves fans, as Sale’s value over the past three seasons has certainly been worth that of this pricetag.

In 2024, Sale won the NL CY Young for the first time in his illustrious career by posting these stats:

6.2 pWAR, 18-3 record, 2.38 ERA, 29 starts, 177.1 innings, 225 strikeouts, 2.09 FIP

Sale then followed that 2024 campaign up with another highly productive 2025 season, although he did miss some time dealing with a rib injury. Over 125.2 innings and 20 starts in 2025, Sale posted a 2.58 ERA with 165 strikeouts.

2026 will mark Sale’s 16th season in Major League Baseball, and he’s certainly on a Hall of Fame trajectory. The southpaw with a funky delivery has always been a headache for hitters when they step in the box.

Here are Chris Sale’s career numbers: 3.01 ERA, 312 starts, 2,084 innings, 2,579 strikeouts, 145-88 record.

Will Chris Sale Reach 3,000 Strikeouts?

Now that this $27 million contract extension essentially guarantees that Chris Sale will play another three seasons in Major League Baseball, it’s time to start thinking about if he has a chance to reach the remarkable 3,000 strikeout plateau, which only a handful of lefties have done in baseball history.

Sale is 421 strikeouts away, but averages well more than a strikeout per inning, so his reaching this mark would really just come down to him continuing to make starts and post 100+ innings in each remaining season he plays.

As for what this decision means for the Braves, Chris Sale has been the team’s ace since joining the team in 2024, and his sample size is clearly enough for Braves’ management to go ahead and get this deal done ahead of Opening Day, when Chris Sale will take the hill to open up the season for the Braves.

He’s become a mature veteran presence in baseball and will also provide much-needed leadership to all of the young arms in the Braves clubhouse.
