Billy Donovan to Meet With Bulls Regarding His Future With the Franchise

What does the future hold for Billy Donvan and the Chicago Bulls? We should find out in the near future.

Now that the 2025-26 campaign is officially over, Donvan plans to meet with the Bulls in the coming days to discuss his future with the franchise.

“I love being in Chicago and the organization and everything about it,” Donovan said of his situation, via The Athletic. “But we’re at this pivot point right now where everything has changed. Find out where we’re all at on this. And how we’re going to move forward.”

Billy Donvan Wants to Make Sure he Fits With the Bulls’ Vision For the Future

As an organization, the Bulls are in the midst of a major shakeup. Last week, the Bulls dismissed executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley.

Now, they’re seeking new front office leadership and it sounds like Donovan wants to get an idea of what the organizational approach will be about moving forward to make sure it’s the right fit for him at this point in his career, though he emphasized that he doesn’t have his eye on any other potential opportunities across the league’s landscape.

“I’m committed here to Chicago,” Donovan said. “I love Chicago. It’s not going to be anything about that at all. There were different opportunities that were up in the last couple years, and I just didn’t even entertain or look at (them), because I didn’t feel like it was right. I’m going to try to be where my feet are planted. I’m going to stay there and stay committed to where I’m at.”

Bulls’ Brass Wants to Keep Billy Donovan On As Head Coach

Donovan has been the head coach in Chicago since 2020 and he hasn’t necessarily been able to lead the Bulls to much success. The Bulls have made the playoffs just once during his tenure with the team and they have a grand total of one playoff win under Donovan.

Despite this though, Donovan doesn’t have to worry about his job security. Bulls CEO and team president Michael Reinsdorf made it abundantly clear that the Bulls want to keep Donovan in place, should he want to continue coaching in Chicago. Reinsdorf even went as far as to say that being open to keeping Donovan on as coach would be a prerequisite for a new general manager.

“If I interview someone and they’re not sold on Billy, they’re not sold on a Hall of Fame coach,” Reinsdorf said. “They’re not sold on a person who’s won championships in college, who’s gone deep in the playoffs with Oklahoma City. … If Billy wants to be our coach and someone’s not interested in that, then they’re probably not the right candidate for us.”

Donovan signed a new extension with the Bulls last July, though the exact terms of the extension weren’t made public. So, Donovan is still under contract with the team for a few more years,  and it’s clear that the Bulls want to keep Donovan around. We’ll have to see if he feels the same way after meeting with the team.
